SAAF Museum, 40th Anniversary, Swartkop AFB
The business end of the SAAF Museum's Harvard AT-6C Mk III aka "Nelson" #7111 at yesterday's SAAF Museum 40th Anniversary air-show at Zwartkop AFB. A common tactic of fighter pilots was to attack enemy sorties from high with the sun behind them. I'm playing with some flare and star techniques from Topaz Labs Star Effects and avoiding the predictable yearly flyby shots. It might not be your cup of tea but that's art!

Like/Dislike/Crit/Compliment?

Tech Specs: The weather was atrocious for flight photography, overcast, grey, wet, windy. There were very few blue sky opportunities and thus the photography was extremely technical. ISO 100, f/14, 1/125s, @300mm Hand Held and no VR/OS or IS assistance.

Dawid Laas flying his privately owned ex SAAF ZU-IMP 479 Atlas Impala Aermacchi MB-326M at Waterkloof AFB during the annual AAD Expo Aerospace and Defence Airshow. The weather was terrible and thus dull light so I took to doing more environmental interest images rather than dull grey sky aerial shots. The BG is the Airfield Tower and there is a captured tank below adding interest. ZU-IMP is hangared at Lanseria Airfield up the road from me at Elite Jet

The Pretoria Rekord newspaper approached me to use this image (uncropped) amongst others and they were published Friday 27th September 2012. More images of the day and the newspaper PDF's at my website.

Hopefully anyone who has used a slow s/s (in this case 1/125s) and hand panned a jet aircraft (and kept it sharp) will appreciate this image especially the perfectly flat horizontal lines. This was an individual click as she flew past and NOT part of a high FPS hold finger on button and hope for the best then choose one image :)

"The Little Weaver" (Ploceus cucullatus)

A (m) Village Weaver to be precise (Ploceus cucullatus) previously known as the Spotted-backed Weaver or Black-headed Weaver.

Shot in the wild at our world renowned Kruger National Park, a 4 day round trip from my home in Johannesburg. I'm very chuffed with it depsite it being partially overcast. They are so busy flying in and out tearing strips off reeds from which to weave their nest. They do not hold still for very long at all. It won an honourable mention at the Digital Photography Challenge August Free Study (4th out of 244 entries)

Malachite Kingfisher (Alcedo cristata) is a river kingfisher which is widely distributed in Africa south of the Sahara. It is largely resident except for seasonal climate related movements. This is a small kingfisher, 13 cm in length and weighing 13-19 grams! Shot at Rietvlei Nature Reserve. Marais Dam. Unfortunately every fish he caught he would eat somewhere in private too far away for my Sigma 100-300mm f/4!

It pays to be prepared and know your camera/lens inside out and major effort and cost go to these shows regularly. This chopper came out of nowhere and fired flares very far from the crowds. I had to react very fast to get a shot sequence. This was image 7/9 and each shot was fired individually, not as part of a high FPS burst "hold button down and hope for a good shot" nonsense. Slowish s/s was required to capture (and enhance) running flares and get some blur of the rotors.

White-fronted Bee-eater (Merops bullockoides) and snack

I've never had a chance at getting so 'close' to them (20m up in the tree) so this was a first. The 500mm Mirror (750mm effective) f/6.3 was used as I wanted to rekindle my manual shooting prowess. I deliberately left the 150-500mm at home. The enlarged image is a bit noisy but acceptable for a 30 year old lens design (but manufactured 2009)...and a 2006 sensor (D80) that's quite noisy at 400 ISO never mind the 1000 ISO I have to be at to get an exposure with at least double the focal length in shutter speed to get a sharp(ish) image, and then cropped in by at least 50%. Whew...breathe in!

A number of (Nikon) photographers came and quizzed me about the mirror :) but the 4, 5 and 600mm (Canon) prime users ignored us...and they call "us" snobs! LOL. C'mon man, we're all there for the same reasons!

Followed him and his Mrs (that's her clinging on for dear life below him) around for about an hour on hands, knees, heels and elbows...
I thought the sepia would add a nice brown tinge to it, you know, like the poop, to make it stand out from the crowd...thanks Topaz Labs

Red-billed Oxpecker (tickbird) driving a 1.5 to 2 year old male Impala. The Oxpecker's are tolerated by African game as they serve a valuable tick removal service. Quite comical to watch how the birds cling onto their hosts whilst searching through the fur, feeding or just goofing off.
