Grovelands is 100 years old as a public park. Originally designed by Humphrey Repton for a Nash house it really has been a jewel in the council's crown . . . which unfortunately they have decided to ruin (through lack of funds, I suppose). I have been a regular visitor/walker in this park since July 1974 when Peter and I moved to Palmers Green and I feel an attachment to it.

We played shops and doctors and families . . . with Elsie's family living in the high rise on the top bunk. On the way home from school today she said politely ' Grangran, do you think you may be going a bit deaf?' Had this been said later, after some tooting on her recorder and on an instrument she said that I had given her with a comic, I would have said 'very easily', but as it is I have to console myself that a lorry must have passed by at a crucial moment.

With hundreds, nay thousands, of people milling around I was able to use my camera with impunity - and because of this had taken my beloved (large and heavy) 28-70mm lens

For one weekend, the boats returned. In the 1970s I remember the boat house on this site and the boats . . . I don't remember life jackets . . .

As soon as I saw this woman lying on a park bench I knew I wanted to take a picture, so I walked passed her and turned back. I don't admire someone taking up a whole bench when people were looking to sit down and I don't admire smoking - but I do so admire her panache and for me, that forgives everything! Within seconds of this photo she was asked to sit up and make room . . .

I have been a regular visitor/walker in this park since July 1974 when Peter and I moved to Palmers Green and feel an attachment to it. I remember, for instance, climbing illegally through a broken part of the fence after the great storm of October 16th 1987 and walking round in tears at the the number of fallen trees. . . today there was high jinx to the extent that even BMW (Stephen James) were making a marketing pitch . . . and I've never seen one of those strolling in the park!

I decided to take a picture for The Hypothetical Awards hand jive, but got caught up . . .the only hand available was on the end of my left wrist and to focus I had to stretch. And then I became a little protective of the old hand I'd captured, much older than I remember it or think of it . . . never mind, it hasn't jived, but I'm comfortably attached to it! (If I hadn't had my 50mm 1.8 on the camera you'd have been able to admire my Skagen watch!)
