This is a billabong on a side road betweeen Jabiru and Cooinda in Kakadu National Park. Every patch of water is probable croc territory so you need to stay about 10 metres from the waters edge.

Adelaide River weir crossing between Kakadu NP and Arnhem land

This is a weir crossing to Arnhem land which is normally above water except for a few hours at high tide. Tidal movement at the coast is 6-7 metres, and this translates to 0.5 of water going over the weir once the tide has backed up the river.

The result is strange natural occurence between crocodiles and barramundi. The barramundi want to get upstream to spawn, and a group of 5-6 crocodiles wait patiently on the other side of the weir to catch them.

The crocodiles will also jump up out of the water even using their front paws to catch the fish which jump to evade the crocs.

It is a spectacle not covered by the normal tour buses as it depends on the tide, and the tour itinary is preset to where / when the tour must proceed to.

Even the locals come down to observe the sight or to wait patiently for the water to subside so that they can cross in their 2wd vehicles. 4wd vehicles can cross ok, and on this day a circus troupe made a crossing in to Arnhem land.
