Exeter Cowley Bridge Junction, Main line north to Taunton

Just north of Exeter Cowley Bridge Junction, the trackbed appears to have two washaways. This is the main line to Tiverton, Taunton, London and all points north.

The road-rail vehicles have come north out of Exeter (presumably somewhere around Riverside yard) and are now dumping their ballast from the towed wagons into the gaping holes in the trackbed. The dumper truck will then swivel round and deposit its load in one of the gaps, before they all disappear back south for another load.

With the track unable to support the weight of a train, and no road access, this is the only way to repair the trackbed.

Railway maintenance vehicles in use at Cowley Bridge Junction, just north of Exeter St Davids station, ferrying and dumping ballast into the trackbed where the floods had washed it all away.

Railwaymen hard at work on Boxing Day 2012 hoping to get the lines open again as soon as possible.

This presumably is the only way they can replace the ballast - with the tracks unsupported, they cannot run a train over dropping ballast directly on the track, and there is no road access, the track having water on both sides, part of the problem.

The race started at 10 in Braemar, and the competitors ran through the Cairngorms over a distance of about 27 miles to reach Aviemore some hours later. Some that we spoke to did it in about 4 hours, we saw them come in between 5 and 5 1/2 hours.

A view of the North London Railway Line crossing over the fictional approaches to London of the LNER.

The model is very loosely based upon the approaches to London Kings Cross, with the ingredients - NLR, Engine Shed, slow line flyover - but without any of them being modelled in any sense accurately.
