I photographed these leaves at the Self Realization Fellowship's Lake Shrine (Pacific Palisades, California). It's a beautiful and peaceful retreat from the city, full of simple joys that reveal themselves to those who will stop and pay attention to nature's small wonders. Note: The new Flickr is still very slow for me. I will visit my contacts, but it will take me longer than it used to before I am able to catch up with everyone.

I'm sure I looked quite silly chasing a peacock and trying to get a close-up capture of his glorious tail plumage. Then again, I've done it so many times, as these birds are not at all interested in standing still for photographers - but still I persist. This gorgeous eye spot belongs to one of the hundreds of peacocks who live in the open, not caged, at the Los Angeles County Arboretum. Persistence pays off. :) (Olympus E-510 & Zuiko 70-300mm zoom at 215mm [430mm in full-frame 35mm equivalent], f/6.3, 1/250 sec., ISO 100, open shade, handheld)

Without looking at the tags, you may find it difficult to identify the subject of this macro capture, unless perhaps you've walked a beach at daybreak when wind and tide have combined to create fantasy sculptures in the sand. This may appear at first to be a black and white image, but look closer to see some blue edges from the early light as well as dark greenish patches left by seaweed. I captured this image on Alamitos Beach in Long Beach, California. (Olympus E-300 & Zuiko 35mm macro, f/5.6, 1/200 sec., ISO 400, daybreak, handheld)

I don't know the plant's name, but its red-edged, sword-shaped leaves catch my attention when they're backlit. I've taken lots of photos of them and never been completely happy with my results until this one. I hope you like it!
At the Los Angeles County Arboretum I came across several logs from eucalyptus trees that had been cut down. Their bark was gone, revealing the straight and dense eucalyptus woodgrain pattern as well as networks of paths evidently carved by insects that must have threatened or destroyed the trees' viability. i found the combination of natural patterns fascinating!
This leaf belongs to a plant that appears to be related to Bird of Paradise, and I found the vein patterns quite interesting.
