Cuddalore - Silver beach

Tamilnadu has a coastline that's roughly 950 kilometres long. Which means, beaches aplenty.
Cuddalore's Silver beach is one. It's wide, sandy and occasionally deserted. With pebbles and seashells punctuating the sand, and the river Gadilam meeting the Bay of Bengal here, Silver Beach has got a lot going for it.

The two best statues on the Marina promenade are Gandhi and Triumph of Labour. Designed by DeviPrasad Roy Chaudhri, a former principal of the Govt. Fine Arts college in Egmore, they are very realistic. Almost.
Gandhi's statue has two major faults - Gandhi is depicted with both his left leg and left hand stretched out. No human can possibly walk that way. Secondly, Gandhi is shown without his famous roundframed spectacles.

The triumph of labour statue is modelled after the Iwo Jima statue and shows muscle men trying to move a rock with logs as levers. The problem is, the angle of the logs ae, imo, wrong. And there's no fulcrum to lever the stone away.

Despite which, the two statues are well worth a view.

The domes of the Senate Building, University of Madras. Classic Indo-Saracenic, a style pioneered in Madras. Convocations happen in this large, beautiful hall. Now, newly renovated.

Pulicat, the stiff-upper-lip version of the Tamil Pazhaverkaadu is a beautiful, beautiful place. A backwater of the Bay of Bengal, it forms a border between the states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. A total of 13 villages of fishermen live on either side of the lake.

Once a Dutch colony, this place waits for tourists and the occasional history seeker.

Tranqubar, earlier called Sanangambadi/Tarangambadi is where the Danish came, looking for their colonial dreams.

Here, Ove Gjedde - the captain of the Danish expedition - built the fort and established a factory. In its heyday, the Danes exported more tea than any other European power in India, and smuggled them into England.
The Dansborg and other Danish possessions in India, including the Nicobar islands - were given over to the British in early 1800s.

Kaveri Sangamam - Poompuhar

The river Kaveri/Cauveri/Ponni begins as a small trickle in Kodagu malai/Coorg hills in Karnataka. It then flows south and east, gaining momentum, gaining strength, and fortified by tributaries near Siva Samudhram, it flows frothy and bubbling into Tamil Nadu. It flows south and east, constantly, watering and feeding the central areas of the state.

In Trichy, the river splits - the northern and bigger arm is called Kollidam/Coleron and the southern, arm stays Kaveri. Thus they both flow in search of the sea, journey's end.

Kaveri meets Bay of Bengal in Poompuhar or Kaveri Poompattinam. A historic town now sadly relegated to the back row. Poompuhar was the port (river port) of the Chola Empire. Now, it is nothing more than a small trickle of water, a sandy beach and few fishermen waiting for the river to rise once more and fish to once again bite.

In the Tamil epic Silapathikaram, the leading characters - Kovalan and Kannagi - belong to Poompuhar.

It is impossible for a human to walk with both limbs on one side extended. As in, a human being cannot walk with both left arm and left leg extended or both right leg and arm extended. The pairing is always right arm+left leg and left arm+right leg.

Unfortunately for Gandhi, when Durga Prasad Roychaudhri - the principal of the govt. arts college in Chennai - designed the statue of Gandhi to be placed on the Marina in Chennai, he got the pairings wrong. Which is why, Gandhi in Chennai has both left leg and left arm extended mid-stride.

Unfortunately, further, for Gandhi, almost every other statue of him is modelled after the one in Chennai so he is always seen walking with the left leg+arm posture.

This was in Thalankuppam, my favourite haunt. Stitched using AutoStitch from 10 frames shot handheld. Big size recommended.
