Crumbling Heritage, Chennai

The Government Madrasa-E-Azaam school on Mount Road. Now a ruin more than a school.

A city that's atleast 360 years old (and a lot more ancient), Chennai does not care much about its heritage and history. Lovely old buildings (and some pretty important old buildings) are neglected, and either crumble away to an ignominous end, or come crashing down on people and property.

Rainfall in the city has been above average this year, and this has caused its own problems - timber and old masonry - crack under the weight of water, and strong winds bring down already weakened structures.

These are the things I hope to talk about: both as an archaeologist and a photographer.

My friend Karthik Shashidhar married Priyanka Bharadwaj in Bangalore, and I did some photography for them. Some behind the scenes stuff, some non-standard, non-flash-in-your-face photos, to kind of document the wedding itself, rather than just the people getting married.
Good fun.
Not my best photos, I agree.
But oh well.

Also called Napier Bridge. Built over the Cooum, to give access to the the English inside Fort St. George, to the rest of Madras. Built in 1869 and now expanded, and lit up to almost defy the river that flows beneath.

Bharat, taken just outside Government Warehouse/Arts college on Poonamallee High Road, Egmore during the 16th Chennai Photowalk on the 22nd of February 2009.

Kind of cross-processed. The curves are not what I usually use, and instead of my standard yellow filter, applied a red-ish filter and colour-burnt it. I like results, so.

A panorama of the Government Fine Arts college on Poonamalle High Road, Egmore, Chennai.

6 individual frames stitched with Autostitch. Taken during the 16th Chennai Photowalk.

Perhaps the first college of its kind in the country, the Govt Fine arts college started as the Madras School of Arts. This institution is famous for the celebrities who've built Madras - including Robert Chisholm, KCS Panicker and Durga Prasad Roychoudhury (he of my famous Gandhi statue). It is quite fitting that I've taken a photo of this place - here is where the country's first course in photography was established.

Bharata Natyam 6 - Chennai Sangamam

Chennai Sangamam is a yearly festival that celebrates the folk traditions of Tamil Nadu. It brings to the city of Madras dance, music, drama and story telling forms from across the state, for a week of fun, laughter, entertainment and celebration. It coincides with the Pongal - the harvest festival of Tamil Nadu.

Chennai Sangamam is free for all, and is held mostly in open areas - like parks and beaches. Which adds to its charm.

This year's Sangamam was quite the biggest so far, and in addition to performances, had food stalls (some of which recreated ancient recipes) and carnatic concerts.

Lucky shot, this. I had just switched off my camera and was putting it away when the cab came up. Whipped camera out again, didn't have time to meter much, and so hoped to goodness I'd get a decent exposure.

Taken during the two eighteenth Chennai PhotoWalks. This one was taken at the Chennai Central Prison.

Since I am supposed to be this famous Chennai person and a popular photographer/flickr user, and because I suspect some of the folks who view/follow my stuff online are powers that be - a request.

Please, please, please do not demolish the prison complex. Instead, restore it, and turn it into a museum. Fascinating architecture, beautiful open space and a good backstory to it.

I am even willing to go to the extent of creating an online petition for that.
Please.

Now, back to scheduled programming.
