Comprised of more than 180 bookstores, this is the world's largest "book town." Here you will find bookstores specializing in old manga, children's books, maps, Edo period books, the works of Yukio Mishima, classical Japanese literature, traditional Japanese culture, modes of transport, movie posters and leaflets, and any other type of book you can think of. In fact, it might be more appropriate to think of this area as one giant bookstore, with every possible book genre represented. At the center of Kanda Secondhand Bookstore Town is the “Book and Town Information Center,” an information center open to the public. PCs are available for use, and a large map of the town covers one wall. Attendants are on hand to act as a kind of local concierge, ready not only to answer questions about books but also to offer recommendations on places to eat and drink.
Every autumn, when the Kanda Furuhon Matsuri (Second-hand Book Festival) is held, the area is crowded with book lovers, and the main thoroughfare turns into a corridor of books, with approximately one million books on sale.
