The TMB stage from La Forclaz to Champex via the Fenetre D'Arpette climbs along the side of this impressive glacier. The close views fo the galcier make the steep climb worth the effort.

The Grand Combin on the High Route trek

The Grand Combin(4314m) is seen frequently Swiss stages of the TMB.
The best view of it is fro the east in this case, near Verbier, on the High Route trek.

After a tiring 1139m vertical climb up the north side of the Fenetre D'Arpette on the TMB, one has to face an even more difficult descent that is steep, rocky and scarey.

After several false summits, I was really happy to see this sign and the post at the summit, with Mont Maudit (4465m) rising above.

After hiking through a pine forest with limited views, it was exciting to get above the tree line and see the spectacular Bossons glacier. It reaches the lowest elevation of any glacier in the Alps.

The heavily crevassed glacier Bossons sweeps down 4.2 miles from the mighty peaks of the Mont Blanc du Tacul (4248m), Mont Maudit (4465m) and to their right, the Mont Blanc (4807m).

The initial part of the hike through a pine forest has clearings to provide views of the central and eastern portions of the Chamonix valley, inlcuding the town below.

After a five hour, tiring, but exhiliarating hike, I reached La Jonction, with its glorious views, including Mont Maudit(4465) and the Bossons glacier.

After ascending a fift out of the chamonix valley, one quickly reaches the Col du Balme (2191m) and its refuge, sitting right on the French-Swiss border. The large mountain to the left is Le Buet; a tough five hour hike is necessary to reach its summit from where the views of the Mont Blanc massif are fantastic.
