Mashpee, Massachusetts, April 5, 2012. Fire once naturally cleared brush in pine barrens on Cape Cod. Here, a controlled burn on the Town of Mashpee Holland Hill Barrens area of Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge clears overgrown brush under fire-resistant pitch pine trees. This reduces fire risk to neighboring homes and stimulates growth of oak stems, important for the rare New England cottontail. The burn was conducted by the Town of Mashpee, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, State of Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, and Northeast Forest and Fire Management.
Mashpee, Massachusetts, April 5, 2012. George Baker, Chief of the Town of Mashpee, Massachusetts Fire Department, monitors a test fire for a controlled burn at the Town of Mashpee Holland Hill Barrens area of Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge. The chief wears lightweight fire-resistant fire gear for work in the woods and carries a protective fire shelter on his belt. Test burns help fire managers decide if a controlled burn will meet its objectives. In this case, the test fire showed that the burn would meet goals of reducing fire risk to neighboring homes and improving habitat for the New England cottontail. It was conducted by the Town of Mashpee, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, State of Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, and Northeast Forest and Fire Management.
Mashpee, Massachusetts, April 5, 2012. A controlled burn does what nature once did in pitch pines at the Town of Mashpee Holland Hill Barrens area of Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge. The burn cleared overgrown brush under fire-resistant pitch pine trees, which will reduce fire risk to neighboring homes. It will also stimulate growth of oak stems, important for the rare New England cottontail. The burn was conducted by the Town of Mashpee, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, State of Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, and Northeast Forest and Fire Management.
Mashpee, Massachusetts, April 5, 2012. A controlled burn at the Town of Mashpee Holland Hill Barrens area of Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge helped clear overgrown brush under these pitch pine trees, which will reduce fire risk to neighboring homes. It will also stimulate growth of oak stems, important for the rare New England cottontail. Fire-restistant pines will continue to grow. The burn was conducted by the Town of Mashpee, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, State of Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, and Northeast Forest and Fire Management.
