The N&W pre-planned and built the town of Crewe, Virginia (Nottoway County) in 1888. It was designed first and foremost to support the operations of the N&W as a Divisional halfway point between Norfolk and Roanoke, Virginia. In the Early 1980s, the Norfolk & Western and the Southern Railroads merged into its current entity. The rail yards at Crewe look spectacular from the bridge on State Route 49 heading towards Victoria. The yard presents its own unique geometry.

The Middlesex County Museum, founded in 1935, is the oldest county museum in the state of Virginia. It's located in an old store/filling station in Saluda and has ample items stocking its shelves from many periods in our social history. The texture of this old meat cleaver was irresistible.
Adams Road Patrol No. 3

Among the holdings of the Appomattox County Historical Society at Clover Hill Village are several items of old farm equipment. Pictured is a grader towed by horse or mule to maintain dirt roads; paved roads in the United States did not become common until the 1930s. This device probably dates from around 1910 and was made by the J. D. Adams & Company of Indianapolis, Indiana. The company was founded about 1885 by J. D. Adams after inventing the first successful leaning-wheel pull grader in 1885. The Road Patrol was only one of many items of equipment manufactured by the firm. In 1953 LeTourneau-Westinghouse purchased the company, keeping the Adams name for recognition value until about 1960.

Not too much is available online regarding the firm and the Road Patrol series. The best site I found is at the Historical Construction Equipment Association
archives.hcea.net/?p=collections/findingaid&id=26&amp...
Frog Rust

A weathered, rusted frog on the outside wall at MacCallum More Museum and Gardens in Chase City, Virginia.

The site is fascinating for its eclectic collection of statuary and garden items. When I was there not much was in bloom.

The museum and gardens are part of the MacCallum More and Hudgins House Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places #09001051. The following information is quoted from the NRHP nomination form prepared by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources ((DHR # 186-5020)

“MacCallum More is a six-acre property that includes the house, a guest cottage, a museum, and extensive gardens. The gardens were begun in 1929 by Lucy Morton Hudgins and expanded by her son, Commander William Henry Hudgins, in the 1940s, 1960s, and 1970s. Charles F. Gillette, a prominent Virginia landscape architect consulted on the design of the gardens. The gardens are enclosed by walls constructed of stones from the chimneys and foundations of numerous eighteenth and nineteenth century buildings that once stood in the surrounding countryside. There are numerous statues, structures, fountains, and artifacts, imported from Europe and the Far East by Commander Hudgins, in the gardens and adorning the stone walls. The museum and the gardens are open to the public, and MacCallum More can be used for meetings and small private parties. The guest cottage now serves as the gift shop and office for the museum and garden.”
