Pamplin City (Appomattox County,Virginia) is hardly a city and never was. I think it was wishful thinking on the part of the founders. The one block of businesses is deserted, decaying reminders of the once flourishing life of a very small town and of the commercial architectural styles of the early 20th century.
Fleetwood Church 4
Fleetwood Church in Brandy Station, (Culpeper County, Virginia) was built circa 1880, and was possibly a Methodist house of worship. I was unable to find much of anything regarding this structure. It appears to be abandoned and, if not, sorely neglected. The church is a wood structure with a steep-pitched metal roof. The dominant feature is the tower/steeple. It curiously extends to the right beyond the width of the main structure. There are 3 sections to this tower. The lowest section contains the entrance to the church and above that a sign that reads “Fleetwood”. The center section is decorated in fish-scale shingles (possibly made of wood); the side facing the front has a circle within the design of a cross. Above this is the steeply pitched shingled roof with small simple brackets in the cornice. The entry is red with double doors, approached by wooden steps and railing (a possible addition). There are no windows on the front façade, but there is another sign, undecipherable.

This morning I noticed a string of barns and tobacco barns that I've passed literally hundreds of times. I believe it was the way the light was brushing the sides of a couple of them. Taken at Red House, Virginia (in Charlotte County), about two stones throw from Appomattox County.
[This is one of 5 images in a set] Whatever the one-time use of the Yellow Hen [a road-house, or restaurant, or a club (for entertainment)], it stood out as a moody chunk of architecture on the morning these photos were taken, December 28, 2011. Neglected but apparently not abandoned, as the For Sale sign indicates, the wood building needs obvious repairs such as the roof. The structure has 1 1/2 stories with two dilapidated dormers and a single chimney. It has 6 bays, each separated by painted white brick pillars upon red brick bases. The entrance is recessed rather than projecting outward. This is located between South Boston and Danville on Highway 58 opposite Pounds Road in Halifax County, Virginia,
[This is one of 5 images in a set] Whatever the one-time use of the Yellow Hen [a road-house, or restaurant, or a club (for entertainment)], it stood out as a moody chunk of architecture on the morning these photos were taken, December 28, 2011. This is located between South Boston and Danville on Highway 58 opposite Pounds Road in Halifax County, Virginia,
Fleetwood Church 3

Any views (and comments) are very much appreciated. Thank you.

The area known as Midway Mills, near the James River, was the first settled area (1774) of what is now Nelson County, Virginia (having been Goochland, Albemarle and then Amherst County). Sometime in the early 20th or perhaps late 19th century, quarrying began in the area, producing sandstone for building purposes (flagstone). I located part of what exists—down some dirt back roads of Nelson County. The mining community had its own post office and store. Apparently there are few signs of the mining area or community still existent. This was the old store—my informant said the trash can had been in the building for several years. The processing is a result of playing around with the newest edition of Picasa. Recently added, after the fact, to Explore for May 16, 2012 at #423--I'm grateful for Explore but I just don't understand why this photo. Highest known position at #401

I apologize for the poor quality of this photo. The swarm of bees was high on the rear of the now defunct Cartersville United Methodist Church, Cartersville, Virginia.

Chronology:
12:32 the swarm is spotted and 3 quick out-of-focus photos taken.
12:33 one of the bees decided to check me out; I retreated rapidly.

This morning I noticed a string of barns and tobacco barns that I've passed literally hundreds of times. I believe it was the way the light was brushing the sides of a couple of them. Taken at Red House, Virginia (in Charlotte County), about two stones throw from Appomattox County.
