Mabel Lucie Attwell (1879-1964) was a London-born artist who studied at the Slade School, and was enormously popular for her portrayal of dimpled, chubby children in commercial art, such as valentines, and in children’s books. Her illustrations for Alice are considered among her best, those she did for darker tales, like the stories of the Brothers Grimm and Barrie’s Peter Pan and Wendy, were ill suited to the text.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll, with ninety-two coloured illustrations by Harry Rountree. London, Edinburgh, Dublin and New York: Thomas Nelson and Sons, [1908]. This book is the gift of Jane Dobell.

Harry Rountree (1878-1950) came from New Zealand to England at the age of 23, and became of one the most popular and prolific illustrators of his day.

A welcome reappearance of Sherlock Holmes in print after nearly a decade’s absence. Conan Doyle didn’t actually revive Holmes for this story, choosing instead to set it in a time period prior to the detective’s death in “The Final Problem.” Readers were happy to have Holmes back on any terms, and the book quickly became a best seller.

Conan Doyle’s long association with The Strand Magazine began with the short stories from this collection. Publisher George Newnes made good use of the stories, publishing them first in his magazine, then as collections in both fine and cheap editions. This beautiful first English edition features 104 illustrations by iconic Holmes illustrator Sidney Paget.

Collier's Cover: Sherlock Holmes

“Black Peter” by Arthur Conan Doyle in Collier’s Weekly, February 27, 1904.

“Black Peter” was eventually collected in The Return of Sherlock Holmes, the volume of Holmes stories that told fans that Holmes’ death had been greatly exaggerated.

The cover for this issue features artwork by Frederic Dorr Steele, an illustrator closely identified with the publication of the Holmes stories in American periodicals.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland; and, Through the looking-glass, by Lewis Carroll, with illustrations by Milo Winter. Chicago: Rand, McNally, c1916, this edition [1924], includes twelve colour plates. This book is the gift of Jane Dobell.

Milo Winter (1888-1956), who was born in Princeton, Illinois, was a Chicago-based illustrator of notable children’s books, including Gulliver’s Travels and Aesop’s Fables.
The blue cover of this edition bears a pictorial plate of Alice and the White Rabbit.
