Sunshine on Eagle Cap

mountainlight posted a photo:

This is by far my favorite image of the trip, but I almost didn't take it. You know how it is, when you backpack with other people that don't go very often, you feel obligated to try and make it fun for them. Well, sometimes because of this, I choose to not take a shot that maybe I should. In this case I started talking about the shot and was encouraged by the group to take it and catch them on the trail. I am so glad that I did.

Another rewarding thing about this shot is that I planned for it. By that I mean I scouted out on Google Earth where I thought the best vantage point would be from a body of water. Almost every other shot I saw was from Mirror Lake, but to me Sunshine Lake seemed much more promising. My hunch was correct and this was a truly beautiful view of the lake from a pretty little lake.

So, this is Eagle Cap peak taken from Sunshine Lake.

Eagle Cap Reflection

The clouds didn't want to cooperate the evening of this shot. The funny thing is it was filled with them all afternoon as we hiked. The reflection was still nice though so I took a few shots. I guess the lake (Mirror Lake) lived up to its name in this one.

No Cloud Support

I left that house at 2:30 am to hit Eagle Lake before sunrise. I had been planning all week and couldn't wait to get up that early and get on the road. Shots from Eagle Lake to come.

With 3 kids and a full time job I don't get that many opportunities to get out there, so I take them when I get them. On this occasion I had been checking the weather report and Saturday looked like it would have the greatest chance of clouds. As you can tell from this shot, they never really materialized.

It is days like this that you just enjoy being out and take advantage of opportunities to scout out new locations. This location I really like and am looking forward to coming back to later when I get a few clouds and another opportunity to make this more interesting.

The little wisp of a cloud to the left was barely on the horizon and I waited and waited (2hrs) in the snow hoping that it would do anything to bring just a bit of color to the water. This is as good as it ever got.
