Katmai National Park

This was as close as the female got, about 35 feet from where I was standing. She was moving along a small embankment that followed the stream. Still close enough to make our guide move forward and start talking to her, and then she moved past, with one of the cubs. The small specks are some flying bugs, not mosquitoes fortunately. In the largest size photo (orginal size) you can actually see the insects wings.

It should be noted that this encounter was done with an experienced guide.

They were moving along the stream and started to head towards us. At this point they left the side of the stream and started approaching us. In this area it is not uncommon for females to lead their cubs closer to people. I am told they think it is a safer location when there are a number of male bears in the area.

It should be noted that this encounter was done with an experienced guide.

Katmai Female Brown Bear and Cub Approaching

They appeared from around the bend and were working their way along the stream. We assumed they were going to follow the stream, we were wrong.

The cub is following then female. It is one of the 3 years olds that was also in one of my other photographs (Katmai, Brown Bear Cubs Playing)

It should be noted that this encounter was done with an experienced guide.

Female was watching one of the cubs that had decided to roll in the grass about 40 feet from where I was. She was watching the cub and looking for the 2nd cub that had not come down the path, that would have put the 2nd cub actually behind me. It was not a good feeling knowing that we had been put between the female and one if its cubs.

It should be noted that this encounter was done with an experienced guide.

A couple of 3-year old cubs were playing. While they were still cubs, the size was almost as big as the female. Katmai National Park in Alaska.
