3/11/10 Martins Beach, Highway 1, CA

Went out with d_delosreyes, bongarang and divijb to shoot star trails and other assorted night shots. We hit Martins Beach off of Highway 1 near Half Moon Bay.

This was taken after I completed my stack. As before, the light in the sky was being cast from the distant city. I envisioned this as a b+w shot from the start, because once full darkness hit, the light took on a ruddy sodium-vapor quality. The main focal points (in my mind) of the composition were the ghostly clouds and the stars peeking out from behind them, so color didn't add to this shot. In fact, I think the lack of color enhances the clouds and the reflection off the water. What do you think?

This is another shot that was taken well after the sun had set. You can see the stars peeking out from behind the clouds. The pink hue is ambient light cast from Half Moon Bay.

I named this photo in honor of the guy who hiked all the way up from the beach in his sandals. He had to climb a rope up a cliff and everything. If you look carefully enough, you can see his footprints coming in from the left on the beach below.

In the foreground, you'll notice divijb's tripod pointed out to sea. I really like the solitary feel it gives against the vastness of the ocean.

This exposure was actually taken well after sunset, and if you look closely, you'll notice stars in the upper left quadrant. Pretty much the only way you can tell this was shot at night. The long exposure picked up the last remaining rays of sun peaking over the horizon.

It wasn't as cold as I thought it would be, but there was still some lingering cloud cover which prevented a really detailed, north-facing shot. I think it's a nice result thought, and am happy that I got both the grassy hills and ocean into the foreground.

Here is the one Dali requested :). He was a fan of the clouds flying overhead as I exposed. I'm not too sure I'm in love with the composition, but the cloud effect is pretty cool.

sky/water/beach 5 seconds, foreground greenery 20 seconds. No HDR though, I don't roll like that for my landscapes.

Went out with a pool buddy d_delosreyes for a day long photo shoot in SF. We visited the SF Columbarium, Palace of Fine Arts, and Golden Gate at dusk. Check out his cool photos too for another great perspective!
