I've been spending so much time underwater I haven't shot many images topside, but here's one I managed to squeeze off the other morning before a dive. The 5 second exposure masks how sloshy the ocean was in Keoneele Cove during a high surf advisory.
Green Sea Turtle, Kona Hawaii

New Years Resolution: make it through the season without ruining any underwater camera gear.

Shore diving in Hawaii can be tough on equipment. Last years mortality rate:

1 Canon G9.
1 crappy Canon underwater housing for G9.
2 underwater strobes (one flooded, its replacement died, both swapped under warranty).
1 cracked Ikelite housing back.

Maybe I need to reconsider my hobbies.
As you can see from the above, everything's working properly now, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Cheers,
Dolphin Dance, Kona Coast, Big Island, Hawaii.

SteveD. posted a photo:

Not a great picture, but the other day, the dolphins were having a party. It was tough getting good images, bouncing around in the waves like a cork, with the Canon and the wide angle attachment, but oh boy, was it fun. It’s a real treat to jump into the ocean, swim out to them, maybe get a few images.

I get asked by non-divers why I keep going back into the ocean, and I use this anolgy: imagine you are out hiking somewhere. You get a glimpse of a bear (or a raccoon, eagle, mountain lion, a squirrel, it doesn’t matter). You think: “that was cool, lucky to see it”! OK. What if you saw 5 bears, and they didn’t run away from you? “Wow, unbelievable”! Well, what if you saw 20 bears, and they stood on their hind legs, grasped paws and danced in a circle around you? For an hour. Or two.

And that’s why we dive. There’s a party in the ocean, and you’re the guest of honor, but you don’t know who the host is ‘til you show up. Could be mantas, could be turtles, sharks, or dolphins. You never know what you’ll see underwater.

Also known as 2 Step, for the easy entrance into the ocean. The flooded lava rock lower right is the "step". One of the more popular snorkel and dive sites on the Big Island, and one you can count on for safe entry and exit when the surf's up.

No beach or facilities, but this place can get packed - shoot from this position mid day and you could easily count upwards of 100 people in the water.

The plan was to arrive late, do a long leisurely dive in the bay, and maybe get lucky with a sunset pic. Bonus was a fat, five foot white tip reef shark we spooked in a cave off the point. While I didn't have my strobe, a skylight in the cave allowed enough light to get this: stevedunleavy.smugmug.com/Underwater/Kona-Underwater/1457...
