This is a shot of wildflowers (rough mules ears) on the west side of the White Pocket, which is in the Sand Hills area just across the the northern border in Arizona. Rough Mules Ears only grow in sandy areas, so anywhere around White Pocket is the perfect location for them. I am almost magnetically attracted to them, and I can't go past one without trying to shoot some kind of composition.

Even thought the White Pockets area is not really very big, there is a remarkable variety to the different sandstone formations.

This is a shot of wildflowers and a waterfall in the lower part of Porphyry Basin which is north of Silverton, Colorado. I have been trying to get this shot right for quite a while and so far this is the only version I am happy with. Some of the slopes were completely covered with wildflowers last year. Definitely one of my favorite areas!

This is a shot along Last Dollar Road, which is northwest of Mt. Sneffels, which is southwest of Ridgway, Colorado. We were not really expecting many flowers along the road, but fortunately we were majorly surprised. In this area most of the flowers are Aspen Sunflowers with a couple of paintbrush in the foreground. We really lucked out, because there had been some recent rains and they were at peak bloom. A really classically beautiful Colorado location,

This is a shot of a storm in the flinthills near Alma Kansas. There had been storm clouds forming and dieing out all day, but just about sunset this one started building up. The sun had completely gone down on the pasture but was still hitting the clouds , and the light from the cloud was literally bathing everything with the orange color. This is actually early fall and the grasses have turned from green to a gold with a touch of pink, and strange as it might seem, a number of wildflowers bloom at this time. It was a very enjoyable evening to photograph.

This is a picture taken in the mountains north of Silverton, Colorado. When we first went through this area we could not figure out why (or how) there were all these tree stumps that were broken off 5 or 6 feet above the ground. And then I realized that this area is noted for its avalanches, and what might have happened is that snow had piled up to about the height of the top of the stump, and then an avalanche had come down the mountain and snapped off the top of the tree. There are quite a few stumps in this area and its definitely an unusual thing to see!

This is a shot of a small stream in Mineral Basin which is on the road leading to the infamous Black Bear Pass, which is located between Ouray and Silverton, Colorado. The wildflowers are one of the big summertime attractions to the area, but not every location has the variety and concentration of wildflowers that you see here. In fact, depending on the year and the conditions they have had, a location can go from an amazing variety to almost nothing. So when I find something like this I always feel very lucky!

This is a shot of a small stream in Mineral Basin which is north of Silverton, Colorado. Even though this area is covered with many feet of snow right now, I still needed a reminder that the wildflowers are just waiting for summer time so they can return. I'm not sure if the piece of wood in the foreground is a very twisted trunk or part of a root system. What ever it is, its had a very hard life. This area is not above the tree line but the trees are regularly removed by avalanches.

In fact, during the second week in July there was still a deep snow pack covering the stream on the left hand side. Its a beautiful spot when the flowers are at peak!

This is a shot from the east side of Ophir Pass, which is northeast of Silverton, Colorado. Right now the area is covered in many feet of snow, but somehow it helps get me through the winter working with these summers shots.

This is a shot of some wildflowers along the Cathedral Valley loop road this is in the North part of Capitol Reef National Park, which is west of Hanksville, Utah. To be completely honest, this is actually east of where the park starts, which means its on BLM land. Anyway, we only found these flowers along one ridge and unfortunately I'm not sure what they are called.
I have know about the main part of Capitol Reef N.P. for years, but until I was doing some research this year, I was not even aware that the Cathedral Valley part even existed. It certainly has a different look and feel than the main part of the park, but in its own way is just as incredible. There is everything from the stripped bentonite Morrison formation hills, to giant sandstone spikes and formations, to a huge sinkhole with not fence around it, and even massive volcanic dykes (vertical cracks in the earth where lava has come up through and hardened). If you imagine all these things being larger than life, you will have a pretty good idea of what it is like. And I will be inflicting pictures of all these on you in the next few months ;-)

This is a shot of wildflowers close to the trail that goes up to Horseshoe Lake, which is in the mountains east of Silverton, Colorado. We were trying to make it to the lake to get some sunset shots, but only managed to get about half way up, because there were so many interesting flower patches. This was one of those areas that was way more interesting than we expected (seems to happen a lot in Colorado).

Almost forgot - this area has a lot of mining history, and if you look closely, there is the remains of an old mining cabin in the center left side of the picture, and the dark object is an old cast iron cooking stove.

This is a sunset picture of small meadow that would have been on the south end of an old mining town called Chattanooga (which is north of Silverton, Colorado), that now consists of one rental house (which we rented for a couple of weeks in July) and some outbuildings. The yellowish flowers are called an Orange Sneezeweed and the blue are Wild Iris. The variety of flowers in the mountains around the Silverton area is really incredible during the peak bloom time.

My wife and I spent a couple of weeks in July photographing around Silverton, Colorado. One of the places I had always wanted to photograph was American Basin (which is east of Silverton), but I always thought it was probably overrated. And of course, I was completely wrong - its definitely one of those "Wow" places. In fact as we came down over Cinnamon Pass and dropped down into American Basin (with a storm over the mountains to the south), that is exactly what I said. The wide angle lenses you have to use to capture everything do not really let you show how large and "in your face" the mountains really are. It's definitely an incredible place to photograph.
We only spent one evening there, but managed to capture a lot of variety in the sky as the storm moved along.

This is a shot of a couple of iris I photographed last spring. With all the snow we have had lately, I'm starting to really look forward to spring, so I thought a little color might be interesting. I would be happy just to see green grass!

This is a sunrise in the mountains near Red Mountain Pass, which is near Silverton, Colorado. Even thought it was July when this was shot, it was surprisingly cold (heavy coat and gloves cold). I guess when you come from where the elevation is 1500 ft and end up at close to 11,000 ft, you should expect it to be a little cooler. Anyway we were lucky, and the wildflowers were still at their peak.

This is a shot of some Parry Primrose in the mountains near Hurricane Pass, which is near Silverton, Colorado. Even though this was taken in July, there was still a huge pile of snow not far behind where this was shot. The small stream was being fed from the melting snow. By now, I imagine there are a few feet of new white stuff.

This is a sunset in the mountains north of Silverton, Colorado. Bear mountain is the mountain a little left of center. The trees form a dark colored silhouette of a bear holding (and eating) a honeycomb with its paw. I've seen a 130 year old picture of the mountain, and it was much more convincing then.
