old ornaments

This is a closeup of some Christmas ornaments that were the ones my parents got for their first tree. They were always on the tree while I was growing up. One year my mom almost threw them out because the coating had tarnished so badly and they were so damaged, but I had a sentimental fit about them so she gave them to me. I put them on our tree every year. They're small, about the size of a golf ball, scratched, peeling, and discolored to a semi transparent cream and silver color. Some are missing their tops, some look burned, and one is missing. The box is falling apart, the lid won't stay on, but the little tissue papers that cradle each ball are still in the sections. Mom said she bought them at a discount department store. They have no value, except to me :) I hope you all have something of a treasure like this.

Texas Tri-County Fire 2011
Montgomery County, SE Texas

Dan and I took a drive up north of us about 30 minutes to photograph the damage from the wildfire last month. It was the first time I've ever seen any thing like that. The grass looked like it melted on the ground. Ants were starting to come back up so there were little dirt balls all over. We even saw birds. But there's no denying that the trees are toast. Although there were some places where just the underbrush burned, and the tall trees were ok. I guess it moved through real fast in those areas. You could see the residue of the red fire-suppressing stuff they dropped from airplanes on the roads. Looked like powdered pigment. The strangest thing was how the heat from the fire melted the white farm fencing. It just buckled over and warped into wavy masses.

Thought these would be appropriate photos to upload for the holiday. Kinda spooky. Happy Halloween folks! :)

Tinted White Cyclamen

Heavily processed tinted B&W photo from color original via Photoshop.

Technique (before I forget):
Adjusted color photo using Exposure, Gamma, Shadow, Highlight, Brightness, Contrast, Levels, cropped to 8x8, then converted to B&W using red filter.
Used 150 brush on 15/25% to paint specific petals with 2 tones each. Added deep red photo filter 40%.
Adjusted again, raised saturation and lightness, lowered exposure and gamma, raised brightness, lowered contrast.
Added deep emerald photo filter on 25% to tint leaves, also cooled photo a bit.
Burned edges lg on bottom, sm all around.

Feedback welcome!
