Bald Eagle Landing

redeye^ posted a photo:

I managed to capture this magnificent creature during a trip to a bird of prey sanctuary in Gloucestershire following a week at my dads. I spent some time fiddling with settings on the 5D until I managed to get the best compromise between a shutter speed capable of capturing the bird in flight and an exposure which was troublesome due to the grey cloud and got lucky with this one!

Its well worth viewing this as large as you can as the detail on the bird is incredible.

I do love the awesome roads and hills on the way back from Midhurst and I've always thought that if I ever got a chance to shoot the stars on the hills above Goodwood I'd take the chance. That chance came tonight and I'd have spent longer up there if it weren't for a couple of hooligans who purposely left their car lights on in the car park in the middle of a pitch black area. Still, one reasonable shot is something, just needed less cloud!

Don't ask me to name this butterfly, I am no expert, but couldn't resist posting a shot or two from the trip we had today to the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo at Symonds Yat. I was astonished by just how many amazing butterflies fluttered around us and by chance I had the camera with me.

We had our doubts, we were not sure we could pull it off, but the doubt was extinguished with an amazing opening ceremony and from then on, our country benefited from inspiration, dedication, sportsmanship, grit, determination and incredible moments of the human spirit. We were touched by the stories, moved by the struggle and humbled by the achievement of so many, not just from these shores, but from all over the world.

In many ways, we'll miss the Olympics now it is over. Some, perhaps many of us have no idea what life will be like when it goes back to being "normal".

But these memories will last a lifetime. Thank you London 2012, you were amazing.

I've been wanting to take photographs of stars and nebula for some time, but didn't have much success. After reading a ton of tutorials and finding a clear, cloudless night, I've finally managed one!

It isn't the greatest star photography in the world, but now I have the idea and the process, it's just finding the right shot. Oh and somewhere very dark as this was from the back garden and had a lot of light pollution from the city in it.

My step brother on drums (in the background) in his band playing a live gig in Worthing recently. The band are called Guilty Pleasures.

I shot more than 300 in challenging light conditions in the back of a large pub and a few turned out ok. I particularly like this one in B&W as the light is perfect on the singer and there is enough about it to be moody too.

The sun had gone by the time I reached the bridge in Shoreham to take my final long exposure shots yesterday but there was still a hint of orange remaining, so with the light fading I rushed to set up the tripod, adjust the camera, and put the filter on.

Again, its fairly experimental, although I didnt have long to set this shot up and only got one other to tinker with after this one. Again it's far from perfect and I really wanted to capture more of the foreground than I did and have the sun still visible, but I just don't drive fast enough ;)

This is the last of the 3 shots I took on my travels yesterday and despite not having a dedicated day of photography, to have gotten three shots from the day that I am reasonably happy with, is a miracle!
Adur Sunset LE

redeye^ posted a photo:

After a day of dodging the rain and wind and trying to enjoy a good old fashioned picnic with the children, the afternoon showers gave way to a glorious sunset in an almost clear blue sky.

On the way back home, I couldn't resist parking the car up and dragging my daughter to the waters edge of the River Adur, just in time for sunset.

I used the ND110 again (yes I am addicted) and tried hard to capture the downstream flowing river in the foreground and whilst the corn swayed in the wind just in front of the lens, it gave the shot some realism.

I am particularly pleased with the reflections caught on the side of the river bank, even if it is a little darker than I would have hoped, but this was the best of around 10 shots I took just as the sun went down.

Day 2 of the B&W ND110 adventure and a good excuse to stop the car on the way home presented itself in the form of this glorious view across a farmers field.

I'm very much in the experimental phase of using this new B&W ND110 but each time I have used it I have gleened a little more information on how it works, how it works best and what it can and can't do. For example, it most certainly is a pain in the arse having to focus, add the ring, take the picture, remove the ring, re focus, add the filter and so on...

Despite that, it is starting to give me the kind of shots I have craved for a long time, although I still think moving water is a much better subject than moving clouds, especially when they don't move fast! It is one of the few times I actually wished it was windier...

In hindsight and because I was slightly rushed in to the shot taking, I could have used some different settings to get a better blur effect on the clouds including slightly higher iso and the aperture wasn't particular good. Live and learn.
Long Exposure Groin

redeye^ posted a photo:

I recently added the B&W ND110 to my filter collection and whilst I haven't dabbled in any daytime long exposure, I finally got a chance to "road test" it today.

It's always pretty tricky finding a good subject for long exposure that hasn't already been done, especially during the day and whilst this can be considered an experimental test of sorts, it turned out ok for a first stab.

I set the camera on the tripod, manually focused the area to include the shadow cast from the groin at the center of the picture. I experimented with a few different aperture values and eventually settled on f22, although I prefered f16 initially. I then worked through various different exposure times and found a nice balance at 30 seconds.

Once I had my shot, I took 3 different shots using various white balance levels (to help bring out the blue in the sky and the sea) and then merged the three shots, toned down the bright yellows and magentas of the pebbles and finally cropped the photograph a little so it was perfectly level.

I don't feel like I got the best out of the filter on this occasion, but it was a good session of exploration through trial and error to see what I could create and with a far more interesting subject I now feel mildly confident of producing something far better.

After a few years of digital photography, you build up a ton of pictures. Mine are sorted in to neat and tidy folders, usually by date order and at the very least by year order in a further folder.

But, no matter how organised you are, there is always a new discovery when it comes to cleaning up the photograph hard drive. It never ceases to amaze me that I can have all of this fantastic organisation, yet still stumble across a picture lost to the archives that somehow didn't make it on to flickr or got forgotten about.

This is one such photograph, shot inside the Hilton Anatole in Dallas back in 2006. The shot was composed and made by hand after I happened to chance upon the extreme sunburst light coming through the ceiling in the hotel atrium. Glancing up, I could just about see the tall part of the hotel against the harsh sunlight and with the geometry of the windows above proving an interesting set of lines, the photograph was set.

Oddly however, it has sat in a folder called "unsorted - misc" inside another folder called "2006 unused", which just goes to show, even the best organisation can't mitigate human failure ;)

Oh and just for the record, it got some touch ups today to remove some noise.

One of the most beautiful creatures on the island of Britain, yet one of those routinely singled out as a nuisance. The otter is amongst my favourite wild animals in the UK and we were lucky enough to see them being fed recently on a trip to Drusillas zoo park.

I snapped a lot of this cute little fella, but alas, they all seemed rather boring, so out came the HDR kit for a bit of a play. When it comes to landscapes, I am now fairly comfortable with HDR but wildlife presents a whole new set of problems that I am yet to solve.

Still, every flickr account should have at least one photograph of an otter in it ;)

Otter
