As some of you will know, the global recession has hit Ireland particularly hard due to a preceding era of intense economic growth based on an unsustainable property market, and a more or less completely unregulated banking system. A couple of weeks ago, the right wing government acccepted a bail out deal from the IMF and the European Central Bank, agreeing to borrow billions in order to pay off the bond holders to which Irish banks are so badly indebted. A subsequent budget has seen unprecedented austerity measures, most of which have hit the less well off sections of the population.

There has never been much of a tradition for engaging in civil society in Ireland. Apart from a failed, and tragic, attempt at mobilising workers in 1913, any revolutionary energy has always gone into the movement for political independence from England. In recent decades, Irish culture has been characterised by a post-colonial mindset, a tendency to accept things the way they are, because nothing can be done about them anyway.
One positive result of the current crisis seems to be that people here are becoming increasingly aware and active politically. In the last few weeks, hundreds, and at one point tens of thousands, of men, women and children living in the Irish Republic have taken to the streets, demanding that their voices be heard.
