After leaving Death Valley we drove along highway 190 which has been one of the most amazing streets we've seeing so far. This time lapse starts shortly after Panamint Springs, then takes us through the desert landscape and at some point the high and snow covered peaks from the Sierra Nevada come into the picture. We drive down to Owens Lake with the amazing mountain range in the background. Owens Lake is a mostly dry lake in the Owens Valley on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada in Inyo County, California. Quick photo stop and now our bus is driving in the front. Shortly after the landscape gets greener once we take a left turn to highway 395 in Olancha.

Time lapse movie produced with TimeLapse for iOS and an iPhone 4S, 3800 single photos with a photo taken every 2 seconds of the trip. Music is Creative Commons licensed and composed by FrenchLAB, "Interlude".

The 60 Hz Problem

There is a common problem to run vintage European record players in the US, including the amazing radiophones and record players from Braun by Dieter Rams. These record players run with either 220V or 110V, but need a frequency of 50Hz for the small motor to run at it's correct speed. The US system however has 110V (that's not the problem) with a frequency of 60 Hz. Normal converters change the voltage, but leave the frequency as it is which causes records to play about 20% too fast when these wonderful, old players are operated in the United States.

There are complex and sometimes pricy solutions to this problem (and I'm still investigating which is the best option), but put together this video to present a workaround. It's not perfect, as you will hear, but it goes in the right direction.

The Problem:
- Connecting the Braun SK 61 (or any other player from the SK series) to a 220V power converter lets the radio unit work with a clear, crisp sound and without any problems.
- Records play also with a clear, full sound - but run 20% too fast. It basically turns every record into a Mickey Mouse voice.

An attempt to solve the record player problem:
- I'm converting the 110V/60Hz AC down to 12V DC. I recommend to buy converters that are slightly more expensive (about $15-$20) - the ones for $2-$3 may not work reliably and generate a voltage that is about 12V, but they may be off quite a bit which causes the power inverter (see next) not to operate. The 110V/60Hz AC to 12V DC converters are available in every camping store or online and are used to power camping gear (like a cooling box) at home.
- Now I'm inverting the power from 12V DC back into AC. There are power inverters available in the US (cost about $60-80) that accept 12V DC input (best would be from a car battery) and output 220V and 50Hz to power European appliances while camping.

You will see in the video, that this results in getting records to play back at the correct speed level. There is some buzzing background noise which I still need to resolve / minimize - but you can now at least listen to your records in a meaningful way.

Throughout our camping trip we had the following after-breakfast-morning-routine:

Frank was swapping out the car battery's. The alternator of his bus broke and every morning he took our freshly charged battery from our bus (aka "the organ donor") and gave us the empty one from their car. Everyone else was busy cleaning up breakfast, doing dishes, collecting all the things from the night before (mainly wine bottles) and in the end putting the pop-top roof back down in to get ready for the next drive.

Just past a bridge near the Haus der Kunst art museum, the river forms a standing wave about 1 metre high, which is a popular river surfing spot. The wave has been surfed by river surfers since 1972, and surfing competitions have even been held.
