Fading of green into gold........

For those, who have lived in California for a while, the fading of green into gold seems as inevitable as the lengthening days.
By the end of April the hills take on the warm tones of sunshine and turn light golden brown. Grasses, like the wild oats (seen in the picture) , which clothe the hills of California, persist as straw, pale and almost transparent and gives the golden hue to the landscape.

California Towhees are essentially large sparrows, with a sparrow’s short, rounded wings, long tail, and thick, seed-cracking beak – but towhees are larger and bulkier.
They are uniformly matte brown . A patch under the tail (called the crissum, giving the bird its scientific name- Melozone crissalis ) is a noticeably warmer ruddy brown. Males look the same as females.

A spherical cluster packed with as many as 200 individual flowers atop an upright, leafless stem account for the common name of fireball lily.
Biological name- Scadoxus multiflorus
This belongs to the same plant family as amaryllis lilies.
