This nifty, mid-century modern ("Googie") four-plus-one burned during Memorial Day weekend last year. I left for Michigan and returned to find it partially burned.

This morning, while walking to the Red Line, I witnessed a city employee affixing the red-X to its facade, indicating that it is slated for demolition.

I can see this building from my condo, and used to like the snowflake Christmas decorations which used to hang from its zig-zag overhang in winter.

Many buildings in the northern part of the Kenmore-Winthrop corridor in my neighborhood have either been repurposed as student housing for nearby Loyola University, or torn down. This building is no longer standing.

Coming back from Best Buy, my mom and I passed the Container Store near the North & Clybourn CTA Red Line stop.

I spotted this Cadillac (turned out to be a 1954) from the sidewalk, and immedately freaked out. Mom held my bags as I approached the car.

The window was down, so I talked to the driver, thanking him for the opportunity to photography his sweet ride. I asked him what year the car was (I had thought it was a 1957, for whatever reason), and he told me it was a '54.

I also asked him how long he had owned it, and he said for 50 years. I did some quick math: if the gentleman was in his mid-20's when he purchased this then-6-year old Cadillac, that would put him roughly around his mid-70's today. Bingo.

I told him he had made my day, and he smiled.

Work continues on the former Hancock Fabrics, to convert it into LA Fitness (my future health club).

Removal of part of the facade facing south revealed this former signboard. I wonder when it has last seen the light of day.
