Summer fun at it's MOST FUN. I took this shot of one of boys (Nicholas, 8 years old) showing me how far and high he can jump off the swing set here at home. Can't believe it has been 2 years since I put the swing set together and they actually still use it.

Why the bathing suit? Our twins were in the middle of water gun fights in between all the "flying". Another example of how you can get some cool shots or perspectives you can get when you lay on the ground when shooting.

Here we have (yet again), White's Factory (1831) in Acushnet. I love this spot for its close proximity to where I live as well as the textile history.

Some history on White's Factory:

"A mill dam was first built on this site in 1746. About 1799, William White, Sr. built a stone water-powered cotton mill for himself and three of his sons, Phineas, William and Benjamin. That mill, one of the earliest in the country, burned down around 1830. It was rebuilt in 1831, burned again around 1854, and finally converted to a sawmill whose last operator was James B. Hamlin. The White family still owns the property."
The Haunting New Bedford Orphuem

Frank C. Grace (Trig Photography) posted a photo:

What do you get when you spend a little over 6 hours (with permission from the building's owner) in an abandoned theatre, a camera, good friends, and a passion for photography? You get lots of photos!

I set out to get at least one panorama or a vertorama shot in of the theatre's stage and seating. In the past I have always got just the stage and proscenium or just the seating. Well, I quickly abandoned that goal as there was so much to do.

But when I went though the shots I had, I noticed that I did have 2 shots that might be able to be blended together to get a vertorama (an up and down panorama as opposed to side to side standard panorama).

The 2 shots barely lined up and there is considerable, delicious (to me anyway) lens distortion using the 8-16mm ultra-wide lens. It took a whole lot of tweaking. Had to run it through 2 different pano software.

So, what you are seeing is a very large file. It is a "pseudo-HDR".

www.orphinc.org

"The Orpheum opened on April 15th, 1912 at a very important time in American history. Little did the people know at the ”Grand Opening” that the Titanic would sink on that very same night. This was just before World War I, when the City’s mills were busy, the economy was good even though the whaling industry was slowly declining.

The Orpheum was constructed under the ownership of The French Sharpshooter’s Club of New Bedford. This esteemed group operated a ballroom and armored shooting range in the building for nearly fifty years. Le Club des Francs-Tireurs had many events such as dances, benefits, and shooting tournaments. The Club was instrumental in raising and training recruits for both World Wars. The theatre was leased from the Sharpshooter’s to the Orpheum Circuit of Boston."

www.orphinc.org

Some history of the location:

"Winter Island, now connected to the mainland in Salem, has had a colorful history. It was the site of eighteenth century Fort Pickering, much of which still survives. The island's Execution Hill was the scene of several hangings in the 1800. Winter Island also served as a militia training ground, and in the late 1800s, an amusement park called Salem Willows grew up nearby.

Fort Pickering Light was established in 1871, the same year as Derby Wharf Light in Salem Harbor and Hospital Point Light in nearby Beverly. For many years before, Baker's Island's twin lights had served as the only guides to the harbor. With the addition of the new lights, mariners would line up Fort Pickering and Derby Wharf Lights after passing Baker's Island on their way into Salem Harbor."

I cannot believe that for as many images I have taken of this historic, abandoned theatre that I never took one from the outside front. Maybe because it is all the way across Route 18 and it is practically suicide to get this shot....unless you go on the other side of the road ;)

Anyway, I took this after I way done at Palmer's Island. The sky was perfect for it.

I am the vice president of a group that is trying to gets this historic gem purchased from the current owner who has no interest in restoring it. So if you happen to have an extra $500,000 or so you could part with, let me know ;)
