She was coming back at dawn from a local market , and i offered her a Instax Fuji, a kind of Polaroid. She was so surprised to see her face on a picture, it was the first time of her life.
It is not a hat, it is the cover of injera plate, but most of the time, women who walk for hours to the markets, put everything on their heads! Soon, all the people walking back home heard about the farenji giving polaroids, and everybody wanted one..

Formerly a British colony, Somaliland briefly reached its independence in 1960. It is one of the three Territories, with Puntland and former Italian Somalia that compose the current State of Somalia.
Somaliland proclaimed its independence in 1991, adopting its own currency, a fully independent government, working institutions and police. The authorities organized a referendum in 2001, advocating once again for full independence. However, to date, it is not internationally recognized.
Ethiopian Prime minister Meles Zenawi is the only one to speak about a Somalilander president, recognizing implicitly the existence of an independent State. Indeed the economy of neighboring Ethiopia dramatically depends on Somaliland stability, since the landlocked country’s main trade route passes through the Somalilander port of Berbera… And vice-versa, the economy of Somaliland largely depends on the taxes and duties it charges Ethiopia. Besides that, the principal economic activity of Somaliland is livestock exportation to the Arabian Peninsula. Most people are Sunni Muslims and speak Arabic, as well as some Somali dialect and many of them, English.Lastely, the East African demography being based on clan alliances, it is no surprise that the frontiers drawn by the colonists don’t match the ethnic divisions of territory, leading to open clashes. More broadly, this problem is recurrent across the African continent.

The Intore dancers have been active poachers for centuries, they have an amazing traditional dance, using headresses that go up in the sky.
The dances are about the gorillas who live very close to the villages.
The local people told me that there are both tutsi and hutu in the dancers.

The Uyghurs are a very welcoming Muslim Turkic ethnic group living in Eastern and Central Asia. About 7,2 millions of them live in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region at the western extremity of China. Uyghur means unity or alliance. Their origins seem to come back to the Ding Ling nomads, in the 3rd century BC. The ancestors of the Uyghurs mixed with Turkish nomad tribes, Hans, Mongolians and Tibetans. With the settlement of the population and the development of trade, commercial links with China developped on the Silk Road. At the end of the 10th century, Islam spread. The imperial governement of China then implemented a tight control over the region. This led to the unrest of Uqturpan in 1765. Rebellions and separatist revendications have never ceased since then, even after the region became autonomous in 1955. Islam used to have a real influence on economic, legal land educational affairs as well as on the matrimonial system. Nowadays religion has shrunk to the personal space.

The Silk Road, or Silk Route is a modern term referring to a historical network of interlinking trade routes accross the Afro-Eurasian landmass connecting East, South and Western Asia with the Mediterranean and European world, as well as parts of North and East Africa on about 4,000 miles (6,500 km), It gets its name from the lucrative Chinese silk that began during the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD) and used to take place along it, Trade on the Silk Road was a significant factor in the development of the civilizations of China, India, Persia, Europe and Arabia, Though silk was certainly the major trade item from China, many other goods were traded on the Silk Road, along with non material goods like technologies, religions and philosophies, as well as the bubonic plague (the « Black Death »)

On Madurai market, a man was walking around the stalls and the people to purify them with incense, he gets few money from everybody but makes it with a lot of fun

Madurai is a must see destination for travellers in Tamil Nadu; it one of the oldest inhabited city in the world; this town, founded in the 4th century BC, became a cultural centre for Tamil culture during the reign of Tirumalai Nayak in the 17th century AD; the city, also famous as a centre of learning and pilgrimage, shelters one of the most magnificent Dravidian style temple in Tamil Nadu, the Meenakshi Temple dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi, protector of Madurai; built in the heart of the city by Tirumalai Nayak, this 350 hectares temple, surrounded by large walls and colourful gopurams adorned with a mass of carvings and figures of gods and animals, is the main attraction in town; another focus is the majestic Tirumalai Nayak Palace; for the record, Madurai is the place where Mahatma Gandhi decided to wear nothing but khadi (handspun cloth)
