Waiting along the top edge of the canyon above Cliff Palace, I just caught this Red Tailed Hawk doing a fly by along the canyon coming quite close.

The Road to Shiprock... err, Mesa Verde!

Image taken by my beautiful and brilliant wife, arcadia65.

On the road to Shiprock from Gallup there are several rock formation that make for a slow drive as you have to stop every five or ten minutes to snap some shots. Powerlines and signage pollute a lot of possible shots but you still can not drive straight thru anymore then you could thru Monument Valley.
We were on our way from Phoenix to Mesa Verde in Colorado.

After looking through the images taken this day, this rock is twenty minutes travel time north of the rock formation known as Shiprock.
I can not remember if that puts this north of the town of Shiprock or not.
If anyone has an idea as to whether this is north or south of the town or even better if you know the name for this formation let me know.
Turns out I was all wrong. Wrong wrong wrong.
This rock is not only twenty minutes of Shiprock but two hours and twenty minutes north which places this in Colorado and not New Mexico. Sorry for misrepresenting this image but after seeing this image from flickr user Nihihiro & Shihiro I looked at some maps and my exif data closer and realized I hadnt read the hour stamp after the last image of Shiprock correctly and assumed both images were taken within the same hour. Looking a topographical map of the area backs this up as there are no such features to be seen until north of Shiprock near the border of Colorado.
My apologies for anyone who might have gone in search of this rock due to my memory lapse.
Also apologies to my wife, she is the one who shot it, but I was the one who bungled the details.

Just traveled back thru that area, the rock is called Chimney Butte.

At the end of the day, high winds kicking up waves and killing the reflection, haze filled air killing the detail, but I still kind of like the results of this 3 image stitch.

Cliff Palace Ruins

Three images stitched together.
I am not to happy with the color, the image to the far left had great color as the sun was shining briefly through the clouds but just as soon as I took the next two shots clouds rolled over. The brilliant color of the far left had to be sacrificed to match the other two images. I also cloned some tourists out, except for my wife, I left her in to add scale.

There was actually thunder rolling through the cliffs as storms went close by.

September Rains at Mesa Verde

Stitched Panorama, four images taken hand held at a Holiday Inn parking lot in the town of Cortez Colorado.

Up on those hills is that place known as Mesa Verde. Its a very interesting terrain as canyons cut through a high mesa plateau.

These images were taken from relatively the same spot six months later then this panorama taken in March.

After going outside this morning I couldn't let this day go by without capturing something with the clouds that were overhead this day.
Just a quarter mile or so north of the Mesa city limit on Power Road is where I stood to take this image.

This is a difficult mountain to get a good angle to shoot at different times of day. Most of the land around it is closed off in use by one entity or other.

The promise of monsoon skies were in every weather report except for the one that was issued that day.
Early in the day there were thunderheads that by sunset were long gone.
I was disappointed in the skies but it gave me a chance to scout this area out for future shoots.
I was able to bring out the smog layer for a nice orange and blue sky, if you look hard enough you can actually see the wisp of what used to be a cloud.

"Dissa Point" is not the real name of this area. Just a play on words to express how it felt when the weather did not pan out as promised by a full week of forecasts.

It was dark except for the occasional lightning flash, all the light in this panorama is from lightning flashes.

This is a panorama comprised of three images stitched together with Hugin and blended with GIMP.

Across the canyon you can see ruins in the shadow.
Veiw large or you probably wont see anything.

I think that I am getting better at these. Blending the sky has to be the toughest part of panos.

Bull Snake Crossing

First bull snake we saw on our vacation, this one up in Mesa Verde.

It was crossing the street so I stopped to block traffic and to take some shots as it crossed.
This was the sharpest of those taken of the face. A bit out of focus on the face.
