Tribute in light - 2012

The Tribute in Light is an art installation of 88 searchlights placed next to the site of the World Trade Center to create two vertical columns of light in remembrance of the September 11 attacks. It is produced annually by The Municipal Art Society of New York. It initially ran as a temporary installation from March 11 to April 14, 2002, and was launched again in 2003 to mark the second anniversary of the attack. As of 2010, it has been repeated every year on September 11. It had been announced that 2008 would be its final year, but the tribute was continued in 2009. On December 17, 2009, it was confirmed that the tribute would continue through to the tenth anniversary of the attacks in 2011.

Rock'n NYC

(Pardon the terrible title, not feeling very original at the moment!) Today I made a very much impulsive visit to the Top of the Rock. As I waited in line after line surrounded by scores of tourists, I started questioning my decision. The $50 I paid for 2 tickets started whispering negative thoughts to me. Today, however, mother nature did not disappoint. Beautiful ambiance and cloud porn was the order of the evening! It was enough to make one forget the chaos below on the streets of NYC. (And more importantly the $50 I paid for my 2nd visit to the rock!)

While I was taking this, some crazy who smelled of hot-dogs and ketchup was trolling around in the bushes behind me roaring at me to stop "shooting the building" LOL. Not the sort of thing you wanna get accused of in-front of the trump towers. Lucky for me it was a pretty busy area and the near-by police didn't take her seriously.

Times Square is one difficult place to shoot sometimes. The place has been shot to death for one thing. There are people and cars everywhere (even Horses today) and all the flashing lights could be a bit of a challenge. But yet I still find myself always reaching into my camera bag when I'm in the area - such is the energy of Times Square. Have a great week everyone!

I was hoping to get some wide angle action going with this shot (similar to the 3rd shot in comments) but as luck would have it, mother nature wasn't having any of that and put down a dense carpet of clouds and fog. So I shot the skyline tightly eliminating the excess sky. But at the same time the light hitting the clouds created a bit of an outer worldly effect. Hopefully this isn't the last year for the Tribute in light. It really is a great way to mark this historic day in NYC.

Two more shots from the tribute that I thought were worth posting. I liked this scene with all the onlookers on the grass and at the waters edge. A passing ship left some cool light trails on the water as well. Hope everyone one has a great week! Still slowly catching up with all my contacts work from the last couple of weeks!

North Windows Arch Under Moonlight [Explored]

Decided to stay a bit late in Arches one night to do a bit of stargazing. It was so much quieter at night. A welcome change especially after having to deal with arch hogs that sat gawking in the arch until the very last rays of sunlight faded away, prior to this shot. At the same time these huge arches were a bit intimidating in the darkness. This was my first attempt at shooting stars. There was a near full moon out that really illuminated everything and hid quite a bit of the stars, though on the other hand it did make the arch look cool.

If you look closely, you could see the freedom tower slowly being added to the NY skyline - Those 2 bunny eared cranes as I like to call them, right above the 2nd pylon on the Brooklyn bridge.

Milky way

Its been a long time since I've gotten to see the Milky Way in person. So much light pollution in and out of the city. Far different story upstate though. Well, fall is rapidly approaching again, and soon winter aka Processing Season. So I hope to me more active on Flickr then.

This magnificent looking building features a similar design to the Sidney Opera House. Its lighting and shape almost give it an otherworldly look especially at night. I really wanted to get a shot of it in the blue hour / golden hour sky, but mother nature wasn't having any of that. That said, shooting it at night presented quite the challenge as there were a few bright spotlights, which had become the main source of light, that created terrible flares.

I've been to Grand Central so many times. In all my previous shots there were a lot of people and they didn't quite blur as nicely as I would have wanted as there were just so many people moving all over the place. Caught it on a bit of a quieter day and much happier with the results. Processed this one as an overexposed monochrome for a different look and feel.

Figured I'd finally get around to walking the Brooklyn Bridge while the weather is still nice. Was super crowded being a Sunday but totally worth it! Decided to process this one in HDR as the sky was significantly brighter than everything else. Also made from some cool stacked light-trails.Took a little break from flickr...can't wait to catch up on everyone's streams!

Last winter I found myself on the beach in 15 degree weather. Only a handful of other psychos where out on the beach. I was thinking that it would be so much better to be doing this in the summer...when I could actually feel my hands. Couple weeks ago I went down there to try to improve on this shot now that it's summer. Needless to say, the operation was a complete failure. Among other things, the sun was setting in the wrong direction, the tide was high, there was littler, and people everywhere! Totally different scene, totally different atmosphere. I guess when you live in a big city, the dead of winter is the time for shots like this.

A SOOC version of this shot. It's underexposed and the white balance was turned all the way down. I thought it made for a cool atmosphere especially with that person standing in the middle of the hallway in the light. I think I like this one a bit more than the previous version with it's darker feel and near monochrome appearance.

Can't visit Philly and not come back without a shot of love park! Had to take several return visits to this spot, was super crowded in the day and still relatively crowded at night. (with people IN the fountain and ON the love piece. It's not an unfamiliar sight to see couples taking pictures right below the sign. Didn't get to take as many pictures as I would have liked while I was around Philly, but more to come!

Quite an interesting night this was...I met some random girl in a car who greeted me most audibly from her car. I met another photographer who was interested in long exposures and who's tripod looked like a 2x4 at first glance. And last but not least. I met a guy with a shirt declaring is love for New York. See photo in comments.

This will be the last upload from my Arches National Park visit for a while. Being my first outing to try my hand at landscape photography, I have to say I've gained a new appreciation for those landscape photographers that go out there, chase the light from the wee hours in the morning until it goes down, compose and bring back captivating photos that inspire. It's certainly not an easy task and let me tell you - I was burnt out after all that hiking and I still wanted to do more!

It was really fun going out there in nature on my First visits to our national parks and try to bring back my own takes on Utah's epic Landscape. I certainly miss it and can't wait for my next outing! I hope you enjoyed this series :)
