One of the many endemic fish species of Hawaii. And it's such a brilliantly colored fish! I saw it on the famous (for surfing) North Shore of Oahu.

Tool Using Octopus

This is an amazing example of tool use by an octopus. He is protecting himself with an aluminum lid discarded into the ocean. I think this is really fascinating, and I wrote a blog post about it.

I had never before met a fish who wanted to have his photo taken so urgently. First, she photobombed a nudibranch shot I tried to take. Then, she stayed in front of my lens for a couple of minutes.

Male Crimson Banded Wrasse

Notolabrus gymnogenis. Scroll back a few images to see the completely differently colored female. Many species of wrasses change sex at one point in their lifes (female to male), I am not sure if this species also does that. Very active, curious fish.

I did some minor cleaning up of the background in post-production of this image.

This gurnard is an unusual fish since it prefers to crawl, not swim. I find it quite frequently around Bare Island, Sydney.

What is very interesting about these fishes is that they are very good at changing their color. The intensity of the brown stripes can change within seconds.
