Brighton pier montage

This montage is part of a larger montage that I shot in Brighton, pretty much none stop for 36 hours. The whole thing was filmed by a film crew for O2's YouTube channel. You can watch the film and read more about this on my blog here. You can see some of the other images I shot for the montage in this Flickr set.

i am still swimming in the sea even though the temperature is dipping below 5°c (41°f). because its dark i don't tend to take my water proof camera to swimming with me. also because its so cold there is not enough time to bang off a roll before you have to get out. but imagine this: 2 days ago what you see in the photo was covered in ice from because of a leaking pipe on the pier. quite surreal swimming round it i can tell you, really wish i had a camera with me.

taken at the christmas day swim. because the water is cold most people don't stay in very long so I only have about 10 minutes to get my shots. It was really rough this Christmas so I did not get the chance to shoot many pictures. It was so rough that the swim was officially called off to members of the public, not that it stopped anyone. Several people needed assistance getting out of the water and the individual lying down needed rescuing by Eileen Remedios, Paul Smith and Fiona Southwell (all brighton swimming club members) and was taken away in an ambulance. When I got to him is coughing up water and was not with it, but soon he was able to shout a people to tell them to stop talking photos.

on christmas day brighton swimming club swims at 11am on where it is joined by a large number of none club members, as many as 100 people enter the water. its not just company we have in the water we are also watched by over a 1000 people who line the beach and the groynes.

conditions on christmas day where so bad that the event was official called off but that did not stop approximately 100 people going in watched by thousands. quite a few need help getting out. one person needed rescuing by brighton swimming club members, he walked off the beach to an ambulance but need help to get there.

in case you wondering i did not selectively blur this image and make his face sharp its just where there happened to water on the lens.

from a photographers perspective its all over in about 10 minutes so realistically you can only get about 5 or 6 decent shots each year, its really tricky environment to shot in especially if its rough. nothing will top the picture i posted two days ago not even in a month of christmass days!

this is not actually want it looks like. the kid is running a wave that is about to knock him over. although the wave dose not look big the shape of beach its quite easy to dragged back in and as the water is around 5c 41f that is not a good thing.
