We rounded a bend in the road and saw those trees all lit up--OF COURSE WE STOPPED! I think M and I ended up with VERY similar pics of this place, but given the fence and the obvious photographic subject (those spot-lit trees), I think it was unavoidable. It provided fittingly misty, mystical light at this incredible location. Hands-down my favorite spot we visited in New Zealand. Mitre Peak (for those that don't know) gets its name from its resemblance to a bishop's mitre (that odd, pointed hat they wear).<br /> <br /> This shot, incidentally, was inspired by the iPhone pic I snapped from the parking lot before I headed off down a trail to get what I thought was a better view of the sound. I happened to check the pic I'd snapped as I waited on a long exposure, and realized THAT was the better comp (a vertical shot eliminated the boats and harbor right of frame). Had an &quot;OH CRAP!&quot; moment, picked up my gear and dashed back to this spot to get a &quot;real&quot; shot of it before all the light was gone. Funny how that happens sometimes. :)<br /> <br /> Pictures--out of necessity shot with a wide-angle lens in most cases--do not convey the scale of this place. Mitre peak is about a mile high, as are the surrounding peaks.
