It's finally starting to look like spring around here. Meggie and I drove around the neighborhood and caught one of my favorite trees in a rickety fence-line as the sun was tucking itself behind the mountains to our west. HFF

Some of my school's journalism students waiting for the awards ceremony at the National Journalism in Education convention held in San Francisco over the last few days. Great bunch of students who will be (some already are) really tired when we get home. Tomorrow we will head back to Idaho after a little touring the sights.

Meggie loves her evening visits to the pond near our place where she can run and play. This last week she found an old deflated basketball and carried it around like it was the most precious treasure on Earth. She was disappointed when I made her drop it before getting in the car.

This yearling and two of its friends showed up in one of the neighborhood yards the other night. It's very common to see white tail deer emerging from the woods between 5 & 7 each evening to nibble on the new spring grass in the fields and yards.

This is just one of three herons that I have seen frequenting the neighborhood pond. On Sunday evening Meggie and I were headed home for the evening when I saw this fella standing in the field next to the pond. He was pretty shy and tried very hard to hide from my lens before finally picking up his large frame and taking flight.

Mable the Moose came to visit Sandpoint High School a few weeks ago. As I heading out the door to my car after school, I looked over to the right and noticed Mable standing there as big as life. Since my students were studying Thoreau and had a large Nature Notebook Project due, I figured this was the perfect opportunity to show my students how they could find "nature" right outside the doors of their own school. So I used her photo to model several pieces that they could use as elements of their quarter project.

This youngster and two friends were out grazing along our country road last evening. On a drive down the gravel road that passes by my house, we are lucky to be able to witness a wide variety of Nature's wildlife. It is not uncommon to see bald eagles, white tail deer, elk, moose, wild turkeys, red tailed hawks, and multitudes of geese and ducks. Now that the snow has melted and the green grass is emerging, our neighborhood has been hosting more and more of this wildlife.

Meggie and I took a drive through the neighborhood this evening and I couldn't help but stop near our neighbor's cattle pasture to snap a few images of the new baby Hereford calves. When I was younger we used to raise registered polled Herefords and every spring I miss those little white faces bouncing around the green fields.

Meggie loves to go with me when I go out to take photos after school and horse chores. She now loves to ride on the console in the front seat of my car. When I'm out of the car shooting photos, she loves hunting field mice and brings them to me, dropping them at my feet.

Today was my little sister, Laurie's birthday and although it poured down rain, she did what she wanted to do most: ride her equine friend, Mani, in the indoor arena. This duo can't wait for warm weather to return when all of the horses will again be slick and shiny and we won't have to wear mud boots to the stable.

Pairs of geese and ducks have started to re-inhabit the pond across the highway from our house. Meggie and I have been taking time after school and the evening horse chores to take some time and explore and observe the inhabitants of the peaceful pond.

I've found it very hard to find my usual time to dedicate to Flickr or taking photos for that matter. I'm sorry I haven't been able to view or comment on my talented contacts beautiful images, and I don't know how much I can continue until summer break starts. We've had a long winter here in North Idaho, I'm trying to get my equine friend Dusty into a stiff bit before show season starts, and our school is rewriting curriculum to match the new Common Core State Standards, so life's been crazy. For now, I have a few days of Spring break to visit my favorite online community (Flickr friends). So, if you don't see me for a while it's not because this is not the place where I'd rather be. Please forgive my sporadic appearance here.
