My starlings are just acquiring their adult plumage at the moment with some stuck halfway between their dowdy brown coat and their black luminescent one with the bright white stars.
I noticed this beautiful Poppy in my garden just screaming out for attention and a photograph so not wanting to disappoint it I showed it some interest and started snapping away. At this point Bow, our Border Terrier puppy, started to show some interest in it as well. As you can imagine things did not end well for this particular plant as this picture shows the moment just before he jumped up and bit its head off. The little darling! I did tell him off but soon forgave him. I have never noticed before just how hairy legged poppies are.

Button normally bounds up and down the stepsfrom the lower half of the garden but this time he was playing the hunter in search of prey so was creeping about very carefully. You can see from the state of the steps that we needed to get out in the garden after the long winter to do a bit of tidying up. Button, as you can see, had other plans. The sun must have been very bright that day because Button has come out looking a much brighter white than he actually is.

We have been enjoying a week of hot sunny weather recently following the dryest Winter on record. So dry has it been that we have already been told there will be a hosepipe ban starting in the middle of April. Because of this many of the local parks wildlife is getting braver at coming into our garden and taking advantage of our pond. We will, of course, fill it to the top the day before the ban takes effect. This little fella is scared of our dog but is much more afraid of the numerous cats in our neighbourhood. I do my best to keep them out of our garden as my birds are not big fans of them either.
This is not the main pond but the small one at the side where the water ends up after going over the waterfall before its pumped back up into the main pond. It being much lower than the main pond makes him even more vulnerable to attack from above.

You know what the first sunny Sunday in March means, don't you? That's right, it's time to get out in the garden and do a bit a tidying up after another long winter. I am allowed to do the long uphill stretch above where I am standing but I'm not allowed to do this little bit on the other side of the three small ponds. I don't want to do them either because there would be hell to pay if the rotor blades came into contact with the rocks and paving slabs that mark the edge of that section. If the wife does it, and she does, we just laugh it off.
Button loves getting out in the garden and frightening off all the wildlife I have spent a small fortune trying to attract. The rotter. Anyway having done the upper section I'm enjoying a well earned cup of coffee and a game with Button which he seems to enjoying as well.
I do love working in the garden with Ess particularly when wearing those wonderful leggings of hers. By the way it's a Honda.

Picture 1 of 3.
If you think that food looks like a bit of a 'dog's dinner' then you are quite right for that is exactly what is was. Our dog, Button, has been off his food recently since catching 'Kennel Cough' so his food had been hanging around in his bowl for a couple of days. As I hate waste of any kind I thought I would let this beautiful dog fox decide if he could use it. He didn't think twice and made very short shrift of it.
This is his second visit of the day as I saw him eating the peanuts and suet I put out for the birds so as he was looking both cold and hungry I took pity on him and put out the scraps. As you can see he can see me through the kitchen window but since he was pretty desperate at this time he ate the food while keeping a close eye on me.
As you know I am very fond of foxes so this was a magic moment for me and my camera. This is the first time I have got pictures of one in the garden in daylight, I normally have to get up at dawn on a Summer's morning to get any pictures. It was well worth the wait and I hope you agree.

Redhill Garden - June 2012 - Starling Flapping

gareth1953 Come on Brentford posted a photo:

This brave young starling is just outside the kitchen window. I had just given the mesh bowl its twice weekly wash and filled it ready to put it back on the feeder when the phone went so I left it on the preparation table just outside the back door. Having told some pushy telephone salesperson to shove off I noticed this bird not waiting for me but tucking in just feet from me. Why is he flapping wildly? Because starlings love to squabble and he has just won the argument with a sibling that has just flown off. I have had great success raising these birds in my garden this year but, sadly, at some cost as they keep the sparrows, blue tits and chaffinches away. I prefer a little diversity but starlings do have more personality and character than most and are always entertaining to watch, what is more they don't fly off the moment I open the back door. He won't get his famous black feathers with tiny white stars for a few weeks yet so will try getting a picture this close when that happens.

The wife tells me ( and my flickr friend Jude ) that this is a variety of Magnolia and beautifully delicate it is too. The dark bokeh ridden background is the middle ot the 3 sunken ponds we have in the top half of our garden. The bright red flower is a tulip. It took a little bit of pruning to get the composition to flow round the screen from the red tulip via the magnolia to the fern in the sunlight at the bottom. I'm quite pleased with this one.

BEST SEEN LARGE to enjoy the garden at its best.
Spring arrived so out came the camera. A quick dusting off of the cobwebs and we were ready to roll. This is the upper level of our garden, turn left by the sycamore for the lower level and the kitchen. It wasn't like this when the house was built in 1910 but the previous owner acquired this garden from a friend when he sold his house to developers. It may not look it but it is quite steep and would have been a bugger to mow if we hadn't of bought a petrol driven thing that can just power up it. As you can see the wife is a big fan of acer's some of which were transported here from Newbury but many have been bought locally as the wife just can't say no at any garden centre she visits. I love them too by the way.
Redhill town centre is off to the left and the A23 north to Merstham and London on the right. Behind the trees is Memorial Park. The town centre of all towns should look like this.
