Looking into the Volcanic Crater of El Misti at 5800m. This was not quite the top. It is slightly lower by about 50m I think. We decided before the climb that we didn't care about the top, we just wanted to look into the big hole. The view wasn't as good at the summit so we never actually bothered going up there. On the left hand side of the crater you can see the Hugh,Mikael & the guide. I think all 4 of us were a little worse for wear after the climb. About 3 minutes after this photo was taken we were all asleep in the warm sun. We had climbed since about 1:30am and this photo was taken at about 8:30am. Before the sun rose it was so cold on the ascent that the water on my back pack was turning to ice. With the air so thin up there I felt weak and constantly tired. I do have to admit though I would do it again. The icefield on the way up and down was so beautiful, and the sunrise we saw that morning was incredible. As the sun rose it cast the dark shadow of El Misti across a valley that was so orange that it looked like the surface of mars.

This is a panoramic shot from just over half way up Machu Picchu Mountain. At full scale it shows Planta Hidroeléctrica right though to the Machu Picchu Inca settlement perched on the mountain. To give some idea of scale, the walk from Planta Hidroeléctrica to Aguas Calientes (on the opposite side of this Huayna Picchu) is a two hour walk.

Usually I won´t tone map. But I saw this old broken down truck in a small town near Salar de Uyuni and I figured this would look pretty good with HDR. I like the chalk drawing look to it.
This thing had no handle on either side of the doors, so to get into it one of our friends had to reach into the door and pop the locks. I didn´t question his past, just happy he had the skill :-)

Panoramic taken from the top of the volcano, at about as close as I was willing to get to that crater. The ground around there can be pretty unstable and the area stinks of sulphur. Seeing it up close is some experience though. As volcano's along the South American coastline go this one was a baby at 2840m, but is not far of the size of Mt Saint Helen's before it went off.

We saw this in so many places across the world. People will set up a checkers or chess board on the side of the street and play. I usually attracts a crowd of onlookers watching the game.
