This picture was taken at Cayo Guillermo as well. A few fisherman were fixing their fishing net in the mangroves so I had a chance to take the picture without anyone disturbing me.

So let us cut the story short...skipping all details of our stop in Camagüey I would like to focus on the best experiences of the whole vacation, the visit of Cayo Coco.
It is quite expensive for students to stay on Cayo Coco, because the island has only a few hotels and a camping ground. So we stayed in Moron, a little city away from Cayo Coco and went there by the bus of the workers. That might be the cheapest opportunity but we were restricted in time and money. But the island is worthy to pay every price...
The island was created by the second second largest coral reef which is near the coast. With a little luck you can see on the island different Crabs, Pelicans, Flamingos and a lot more between the large woods of mangroves.

Um die Urlaubsgeschichte etwas abzukürzen verzichte ich an dieser Stelle auf den Zwischenstop in Camagüey und komme zu dem schönsten Urlaubserlebnis, dem Besuch von Cayo Coco.
Da der Aufenthalt auf Cayo Coco für Studenten etwas zu teuer ist, blieben wir im nahe gelegenen Moron, einer Kleinstadt ohne große Besonderheiten. Dies bot uns allerdings die einmalige Gelegenheit einen cubanischen Rummel zu besuchen und relativ günstig mit dem Arbeiterbus auf die Insel Cayo Coco zu fahren.
Cayo Coco besteht aus weißem Korallensand, welcher dem weltweit zweitgrößen Riff unweit der Küste entstammt. Mit einem bißchen Glück erspäht man auf der Insel zwischen den ausgedehnten Mangrovenwäldern viele verschiedene Krabben, Pelikane, Flamingos und vieles mehr.

This summer i spend 1 month in cuba where i took this picture. The titel matches according to my experiences very good because there are several things on the picture typical cuban...the most obvious fact might by the classical car but the way of fixing the hydrant is unique ;)

The final stop, Matanzas

Matanzas was the last stop of our jurney before we returned to Havanna. A most of the tourists ignore Matanzas because Varadero and other cities are more popular but they don't know what they are missing.

Finally a few words about the life of tourist in cuba. If you are planning a backpacking journey though cuba you are good advised to take the viazul bus if you don't speak spanish. But if you do it is more interesting to go by a classical car instead. Furthermore a journey can become very expensive for tourists because the prices are much higher if you are foreigner. Mostly there is a cheaper alternative and never believe the stories on the street.
The stories, the touts and the traders on the street are the major disturbance because you are approached everywhere...and be careful with the water and the food. If you eat on the streets it is often accompanied with stomachaches.

The nature of Baracoa

The isolated small city named Baracoa is one of the most beautiful places of cuba reasoned by the diverse nature around the city. Snorkeling along the coast at the playa blanca, go hiking at El Yunque or take a bath in one of the water caves are advisable activities at Baracoa. And don't miss to try a chocolate ice or bar in one of the stores, it might be the last chance to buy it in whole cuba.

Die isolierte Kleinstadt Baracoa gehört zu den schönsten Plätzen Kubas, da ihre ungestörte und vielfältige Natur ungemein polarisiert. Eine Wandertour zum Tafelberg El Yunque ist hierbei genauso zu empfehlen, wie schnorcheln vor der Küste am Playa Blanca oder ein Bad in einer der wassergefüllten Höhlen. Doch eines sollte man vorort nicht verpassen, ein Schokoeis in der Eisdiele und die Schokoriegel sind einzigartig für Kuba und nirgendwo sonst zu bekommen.

The dirty streets of Santiago

The guidebook titled that the air quality of Santiago has increased since they are using modern busses so it was hard to imagine how dirty the air has been in former times. From time to time we were standing in a black cloud of exhaust gases and soot. Nevertheless Santiago is worthy of beeing visited for its historical buildings, factories and the graveyard. The graveyard of the city is famous for the graves of Compay Segundo (Buena vista social club), Rose Marti (THE national hero) and the Bacardi family. The visit of Cayo Granma and the castle El Morro was one of the unexpected highlights but the bay of Santiago is wasted with oil of the close-by situated refinery.

Im Reiseführer stand über Santiago, dass durch die Umrüstung auf moderne Gelenkbusse die Luftqualität verbessert wurde. Nachdem wir 3 Tagelang durch Ruß und Abgaswolken gewandert sind, ist es schwer vorstellbar, dass sich wirklich etwas geändert hat, bzw. wie es denn damals ausgesehen haben muss.
Allerdings lohnt sich der Besuch Santiagos trotzdem, denn Santiago wartet mit unrestaurierten historischen Gebäuden, Fabriken und einem berühmten Friedhof auf. Auf dem Friedhof finden sich die Gräber von Compay Segundo (vom Buena vista social club), Jose Marti (DEM Nationalhelden) und das Familiengrab der Bacardi Familie, der einst die Rumfabrik Santiagos gehörte. Die nahegelegene Insel Cayo Granma und die Festung El Morro waren die unerwarteten Highlights unseres Aufenthalts, allerdings ist die Bucht Santiagos durch Öl der ortsansässigen Raffenerie belastet und der Strand der Insel Granma ist partiell stark schwarzverklebt.

A short stop in Bayamo

The short time we stayed in Bayamo was quite enough to see the city and the sights because the city is no touristic hotspot. Bayamo is a little different from the other cuban cities because it is more cultural and there you meet lots of young people on the streets. In Bayamo we found the first little cuban shopping promenade but all stores offered nearly the same products...but what did we expected? We were in cuba...

Der kurze Aufenthalt von 2 Tagen in Bayamo reichte gut aus um die Stadt und die Sehenswürdigkeiten zu erkunden, da die Stadt kein großes Tourismuspotential besitzt. Allerdings fällt auf, dass Bayamo sich eindeutig von anderen kubanischen Großstädten unterscheidet, da die Stadt kultureller und jünger wirkt. Wirklich besonders an Bayamo ist die Einkaufsstraße im Zentrum der Stadt, welche schön gestaltet ist. Leider sind auch dort die Geschäfte mit den gleichen wenigen Produkten gefüllt wie im restlichen Kuba...aber was erwartet man eigentlich?

The colourful buildings of Trinidad

The beauty missing in Cienfuegos we found in Trinidad. The small city is entirely restaurated and at some places very colourful. But visiting the historical city center demands about 2 hours so it is advisable to rent a bike and drive to the beaches outside of the town. Not very far from the beach la Boca we went snorkeling and had an overwhelming view on the marine biosphere. But the city is famous for another beach the beach Ancon. This beach is highly frequented by tourists but it is indeed very beautiful.

Die Schönheit, welche in Cienfuegos fehlte, fanden wir in Trinidad. Die kleine Stadt ist fast vollständig restauriert und an einigen Stellen sehr farbenfroh. Zwar sind 2 Stunden völlig ausreichend um den historischen Stadtkern zu sehen, aber im Umland finden sich einige schöne Strände welche gut mit dem Fahrrad erreichen sind. Unweit des Strandes "La Boca" gingen wir schnorcheln, eines der absoluten Urlaubshighlights. Der Strand "Playa Ancon" ist der berühmteste Strand der Region und hochfrequentiert von Touristen. Es lässt sich allerdings nicht von der Hand weisen, dass dieser Strand dennoch schön ist.

The guidebook describes Cienfuegos as one of the pearls of Cuba but we can't go along with this statement. A few years ago the city became UNESCO status for it architecture but the buildings are in comparison to other cities not unique in architecture or conservation. Furthermore you are good adviced to spend not that much time in Cienfuegos because the sights are rare, but on the streets you definitely get a clue about the cuban life...

Der Reiseführer beschreibt Cienfuegos als eine architektonische Perle Kubas. Diese Behauptung hat sich für uns leider nicht Bewahrheitet, denn im Vergleich zu anderen Städten war Cienfuegos eher normal in Architektur und Erhaltungszustand der Gebäude und zudem auch nicht sehr reich an Sehenswürdigkeiten (vom Friedhof und Malecon mal abgesehen). Vor wenigen Jahren bekam Cienfuegos jedoch einen UNESCO Weltkulturerbetitel für seine außergewöhnliche Architektur verliehen. Allerdings ließ sich dort gut das kubanische Leben auf der Straße kennenlernen und wir trauten erstmals an kubanische Straßenstände, die uns dort erstmals richtig bewusst wurden.

The caves of Vinales

After 4 days in Havanna we decided to head Vinales, a small village in the district of pinar de rio. In the district pinar de rio a most of the famous cuban tabacco is grown. But this part of cuba is as well famous for its landscape, because it is characterized by karstic formations similar to the mountains in china near Yangshoa, Guilin. Those caves, like the cave on the picture are typical for karstic landscapes, in consequence the longest cave (Caverna de Santo Tomás) is situated very close to Vinales.

Nach 4 Tage Aufenthalt in Havanna entschieden wir uns nach Vinales, einem kleinen Dorf in der Provinz Pinar de Rio aufzubrechen. Pinar de Rio ist das Hauptanbaugebiet für den weltberühmten kubanischen Tabak. Allerdings ist die Provinz ebenfalls für ihre Karstlandschaft berühmt, die dem Turmkarst in China sehr stark ähnelt. Höhlen, wie die Abgebildete sind typisch für Karstlandschaften. Aus diesem Grund erstreckt sich in der Nähe von Vinales die größte Höhle Kubas (Caverna de Santo Tomás) mit eine Länge von 46 km.

The skyline of Havanna

This picture shows the malecon in the early evening. At this time lots of young people come here to meet, drink, go fishing or simply enjoy the sunset. In the background raises the "skyline" of Havanna in the sunset. Most of the buildings are partly or totally destroyed...the malecon is as well famous for the pictures taken during a tropical thunderstorms.

Dieses Bild zeigt den Malecon Havannas in den frühen Abendstunden. Zu dieser Zeit treffen sich am Malecon viele junge Leute um den Sonnenuntergang zu genießen, zu trinken oder einfach zu angeln. Im Hintergrund erhebt sich die Skyline Havannas in den Sonnenuntergang. Glücklicherweise ist es unter diesen Lichtbedingungen nicht möglich den Gebäudezustand zu erkennen, denn viele Gebäude sind teilweise bis vollständig zerstört. Der Malecon Havannas ist berühmt für Aufnahmen während Sturmfluten und tropischen Stürmen, bei denen sich die Wellen so hoch türmen, dass sie bis in die ersten Häuserreihen reichen...
