The lake Víti (Icelandic for hell) was formed in 1724 by a steam eruption that marked the beginning of a series of major volcanic eruptions that continued until 1729. The lake is 320 meters in diameter, 33 meters deep and the water has a temperature of about 25°C. The turquoise colour is due to minerals dissolved in the water.

It may not look like it, but I was at the very edge of the crater when I took this - the rim dropped away straight down to the crater, and I wasn't getting any closer!

According to Icelandic mythology, trolls that don't get back to their caves before sunrise are turned to stone - but I think this one was turned to ice :-) Best on black.

Seen on the Jökulsárlón glacial lake in Iceland. In the background you can see the south end of the glacier Vatnajökull, which feeds the lake.

As of the December 1st, 2007 census, Sandgerði had a population of 1,723 and was the 26th most populated area in Iceland.

For Iceland and for the Icelandic people, Þingvellir is of immense historical, cultural, and geological significance. It is also rather beautiful.

The weather was overcast while I was there, so I went for black and white.

Jökulsárlón is the best known and the largest of the glacial lakes in Iceland. It is at the south end of the glacier Vatnajökull between Skaftafell National Park and Höfn. Appearing first between 1934-1935, the lake grew from 7.9 km² in 1975 to at least 18 km² today because of heavy melting of the Icelandic glaciers. Approaching a depth of 200 m, Jökulsárlón is now probably the second deepest lake in Iceland.

Taken somewhere along the 65km of road that twist and turn along the Hvalfjörður (literally whale fjord) between Reykjavik and Akranes in Iceland. The weather was magnificent and the colours were unbelievable - I have a note in my photo log reminding me just how they were!

Sunset over Mývatn

I spent two nights here at Mývatn, and each evening there was a spectacular sunset. The area is famous for it's abundant birdlife and for it's midges (Icelandic mý ("midge") and vatn ("lake"); the lake of midges).

Possibly kitsch, but I found the subject, the colours, the light and the reflection irresistible.

Taken in the harbour of Stykkishólmur, the view is North across the Breiðafjörður to the West fjords.

Did I mention that Stykkishólmur also has a beautiful and unusual church???

Looking North across the Breiðafjörður towards the remote West fjords. The weather was fantastic on this day.

Stykkishólmur has about 1,100 inhabitants and counts as a large town by Icelandic standards. It also has a beautiful and unusual church.
