The humorously named Poker Jim Ridge abuts the Warner Lakes in Oregon's vast high desert. On the top of the ridge and beyond to the east is the Hart Mountain Antelope Refuge. The Warner Lakes is actually a series of a dozen alkali seas whose water levels fluctuate in roughly 15-year cycles.

I'm humbled by the time J and I spent out on the overlooks of the area. Watching the sun set while photographing it was something I'll remember a long while.

Returned from a week of road-tripping, camping, and nature obsession in southeastern Oregon. As is usual with me, the four walls and a ceiling upon return are alienating.

But I feel refreshed. I clicked the camera a lot. Spent a lot of time looking through binoculars. Took daily 6am, roll-out-of-the-tent nature walks. Dodged a good amount of various forms of precipitation. Grew a beard. And shared a week's worth of good times with my love.

I hiked up to Paradise Park within the Mt. Hood Wilderness today and came away very impressed. It's a bit of a bruiser to get up there (12 miles, 2300 feet elevation gain, one sketchy glacial melt crossing) but all in all, well worth the effort. I'll be aiming to spend a night or two up there very soon.

The Steens Mountain served as a bit of an axis for our trip. We went completely around it at least once and camped on all sides of it most nights of our trip. Going to the top is an easy possibility but not until July because of snow.

This view is from Mann Lake, which we did not camp at but would make a fine bedding down spot, especially if you're into photography.

Mann Lake used to be a popular fishing destination until a goldfish made its way onto a barb for the purpose of bait. Story goes that Mrs. Goldfish promptly shed the hook and proceeded to unload Guthrie the Goldfish and Gwyneth the Goldfish into a new life. Guthrie and Gwyneth did what they knew how to do. But they didn't like to share with the incumbent trout. With both species competing for finite resources, the trout lost out to goldfish. No one fishes at Mann Lake anymore.

For those who care, I did hear a report on Oregon Public Broadcasting that the do-gooder folks at Fish and Wildlife are planning to destroy all life in the lake and reintroduce native species in the years to come. As epic and seemingly unspoiled as these remote places are, the forces of Homo sapiens are at play. And I haven't even brought up the wind turbines proposed for the mountain itself.

Contradictions of Hood and Self

Mt. Hood certainly has a distinct summit/peak, but from this vantage point it's hard to really tell it's the same mountain when normally viewed from miles and miles away. It reminds me a bit of one of my all-time favorite quotes, the one listed above. The large and multitudinous Mount Hood seems to be contradicting itself, or at the least, my perception of itself.

All the clouds pictured here played around the summit most of the day, frustrating some outdoor-lovers and enthralling other nature enthusiasts. I think I was in both camps. Yes, I am large. I contain multitudes.

A faint trail among the rocks heads higher and higher up Barrett Spur towards Mt. Hood. A scramble path on the left led me up to the promontory half visible here at 7800 feet. The lighting was divine at this hour but it also hastened my visit as I was worried about making it back to camp before dark. Being by myself up this high on the mountain was further cause for uncertainty. My intention wasn't to go all the way up but once I was up there, it's practically impossible to turn back. It hasn't gotten me in trouble yet but this pride or drive, whatever you call it, is worth observing as it can affect more sane judgment.

Water trickles (and in some spots flows) down from the glaciers on Mt Hood through this soggy meadow on Mt. Hood's north side. Wy'East Basin made another great day hike from our campsite at Dollar Lake. It was just .9 mile along the well-loved Timberline Trail. Although I didn't explore it, there is a user trail that heads up towards the mountain from here, possibly connecting with Barrett Spur.

Elk Cove made a perfect day-hike destination from our campsite at Dollar Lake. The route there followed the Timberline Trail for a mile, descending to the meadows below the Coe glacier. Part of it skirted rockslides that were awash in a cornucopia of wildflowers. No, Chica_Maravilla, they're not goats, although that would've been welcomed. These are seedheads of the Western Pasque flower. Otherwise affectionately known as Hippies on a Stick. Gotta love it.

Well, I said there'd be more photos of Mt. Hood so here it is. I don't like cluttering up the stream with repetitive shots, but these each have their individual charm, at least in my eyes. This was taken as I was climbing to the tip of Barrett Spur around the 7700 feet level, visible in other photos.
