I spent this quiet sunset on cliffs close to Grenivík, a small town in Eyjafjörður.

Grýtubakkahreppur er sveitarfélag við austanverðan Eyjafjörð. Það nær frá Víkurskarði norður alla Látraströnd en byggð er mest í kringum Höfða og þar er sjávarþorpið Grenivík. Yfir Grenivík gnæfir fjallið Kaldbakur.
Grýtubakkahreppur tilheyrir Suður-Þingeyjarsýslu fremur en Eyjafjarðarsýslu samkvæmt hefðbundinni sýsluskiptingu landsins. Í kosningum um sameiningu sveitarfélaga sem fram fóru 8. október 2005 höfnuðu íbúar hreppsins tillögu um sameiningu allra sveitarfélaga við Eyjafjörð með miklum meirihluta, einungis 2 voru samþykkir tillögunni af þeim 256 sem greiddu atkvæði.

Strokkur (Icelandic for "churn") is a fountain geyser in the geothermal area beside the Hvítá River in Iceland in the southwest part of the country, east of Reykjavik. It is one of Iceland's most famous geysers,[1] erupting about every 4-8 minutes 15 - 20 m high, sometimes up to 40 m high.[2]

Water at a depth of 23 metres (75 ft) is around 120 °C (248 °F), but cannot boil because of the weight of the water pushing down on it from above. When this water is forced up to around 16 metres (52 ft), some of the water may be above boiling point, which sets off the chain reaction: the pressure decrease allows more water to boil and flash boil into steam, which drives the unboiled water further up the conduit. As this happens closer and closer to the surface, with increasing velocity, the water and steam is forced out, and it is this mixture of water and steam that forms the eruption.[3]

Hrísey er dropalaga eyja í norðanverðum Eyjafirði sem stendur austur af Dalvík og norðaustur af Árskógssandi. Eyjan mælist 8,0 km2 að flatarmáli og er næststærsta eyja við Íslandsstrendur á eftir Heimaey. Syðst á eynni er lítið þorp þar sem flestir búa en þar voru fastir íbúar um 180 árið 2003. Hrísey er aðallega þekkt fyrir að vera vinsæll ferðamannastaður og fyrir einu einangrunarstöð gældýra á Íslandi sem nefnist Hvatastaðir. Hrísey heyrir alfarið undir Akureyrarkaupstað.

Hrísey er aflöng eyja frá norðri til suðurs, rúmlega 7 km löng en 2,5 km breið. Hún er láglend, rís hæst 110 metra yfir sjávarmál, og er vel gróin. Berggrunnur eyjarinnar er blágrýti, um 10 milljón ára gamall. Jarðhiti er í eynni og hitaveita. Borholurnar eru við ströndina um 1 km norðan við þorpið. Í Hrísey eru laugar í flæðarmálinu sem voru um 50°C áður en vinnsla hófst. Við Laugakamb á norðurenda eyjarinnar er laug sem fer á kaf í flóði, hitinn þar er yfir 60°C.
Samfelld byggð hefur verið í Hrísey allt frá landnámstíð. Hríseyjar-Narfi Þrándarson nam eyna. Hans er getið í Landnámabók og Víga-Glúms sögu. Hrísey heyrði lengst af undir Árskógshrepp en var gerð að sérstökum hreppi, Hríseyjarhreppi, árið 1930 og myndaði upp frá því eigin hreppsnefnd. Hinn 1. ágúst 2004 sameinaðist Hríseyjarhreppur Akureyrarkaupstað að undangenginni atkvæðagreiðslu í báðum sveitarfélögunum 26. júní s.á.

Hrísey (Icelandic pronunciation: [ˈr̥iːsei]) is a small island off the north coast of Iceland, situated approximately 35 kilometres north of Akureyri, in Eyjafjörður, at 66°00′N 18°23′WCoordinates: 66°00′N 18°23′W. Since 2004, the island has been a part of the municipality of Akureyri, having previously been a municipality in its own right.
Hrísey itself has a total land area of 7.67 km², and is about 7.5 km long by 2.5 km wide at its widest point in the south. It is the second-largest island off the coast of Iceland (after Heimaey in the Vestmannaeyjar). It has a population of approximately 200 people, and has been continuously inhabited since the time of settlement in Iceland. The island is connected to the mainland by a ferry service to Árskógssandi, a fifteen-minute sailing.
Historically, the island was used as a base for the fishing industry, first by Norwegians and Swedes, and then by Icelanders, and by the late nineteenth century it housed a herring salting factory. Overfishing in Icelandic waters led to a steep decline in the fishing industry in the 1960s, and the last fish freezing plant on Hrísey, owned by the Eyjafjörður Co-operative Society, closed in 1999.
More recently, Hrísey has developed a reputation as a birdwatching destination. There are no natural predators on the island, making it an ideal bird sanctuary. The northern part of Hrísey, Ystabæjarland, is a privately owned nature reserve, and the killing of birds is forbidden on the rest of the island. Among the forty species of bird on the island are the ptarmigan, arctic tern, and eider duck.

Icelandic farming

This is an outhouse typical for most small 20th century Icelandic farms. It is a sheephouse and probably a cowshed with a small barn. The strange thing about this particular one is that it sits on an tiny Island just off Mýrar, in west Iceland. (Borgarnes region).

Me and Helga had the luck to stay on the Island for more than 24hrs to expirence the nature and wildlife at it's max. I'm hopefully going to process more from the trip soon and exhibit it here. The expirience of going there is defnietly on my top 5 list of all times.

The picture is taken from Hjalteyri in Eyjafjörður. on the right is Kaldbakur, the tallest mountain in Eyjafjörður, on the left we can see the second biggest Island on the shores of Iceland, called Hrísey.

The climate of Iceland's coast is subpolar oceanic. The warm North Atlantic Current ensures generally higher annual temperatures than in most places of similar latitude in the world. Regions in the world with similar climate include the Aleutian Islands, the Alaska Peninsula, and Tierra del Fuego, although these regions are closer to the equator. Despite its proximity to the Arctic, the island's coasts remain ice-free through the winter. Ice incursions are rare, the last having occurred on the north coast in 1969.[42]
There are some variations in the climate between different parts of the island. Generally speaking, the south coast is warmer, wetter and windier than the north. The Central Highlands are the coldest part of the country. Low-lying inland areas in the north are the most arid. Snowfall in winter is more common in the north than the south.
The highest air temperature recorded was 30.5 °C (86.9 °F) on 22 June 1939 at Teigarhorn on the southeastern coast. The lowest was −38 °C (−36.4 °F) on 22 January 1918 at Grímsstaðir and Möðrudalur in the northeastern hinterland. The temperature records for Reykjavík are 26.2 °C (79.2 °F) on 30 July 2008, and −24.5 °C (−12.1 °F) on 21 January 1918.

Today me and Helga went to three different locations, one to get some pictures of flowers (Helga made this one: www.flickr.com/photos/hkvam/5959766594/). Then we decided to take a short walk in the small forest Vaðlareitur, and finally we drove towards the orange sunset.

Dryas octopetala (common names include mountain avens, white dryas, and white dryad) is an arctic-alpine flowering plant in the family Rosaceae. It is a small prostrate evergreen subshrub forming large colonies, and is a popular flower in rock gardens. The specific epithet octopetala derives from the Greek octo (eight) and petalon (petal), referring to the eight petals of the flower, an unusual number in the Rosaceae, where five is the normal number. However flowers with up to 16 petals also occur naturally.

Holtasóley (fræðiheiti: Dryas octopetala) er jurt af rósarætt sem vex á fjöllum og heimskautasvæðum.
Blöðin kallast rjúpnalauf. Þau eru skinnkennd, sígræn og gláandi, dökkgræn að ofan en silfurhvít og gláandi að neðan. Stönglar eru trékenndir. Holtasóley myndar breiður eða flatar þúfur. Blómin eru hvít með átta stórum krónublöðum.

Hárbrúða
Þegar aldin þroskast verður stíll frævunnar að fjaðurhærðum hala. Frævurnar setja svip á jurtina við aldinþroskun og er hún þá nefnd hárbrúða. Holtasóley er mjög harðgerð jurt sem er algeng í mólendi og á heiðum og vex upp í 1000 m.y.s.
Holtasóley er ein of einkennisjurtum á norðurslóðum. Íslendingar völdu holtasóley sem þjóðarblóm í atkvæðagreiðslu 2004. Holtasóley er einnig þjóðarblóm Sama.

Hjalteyri er smábyggð norðan við Akureyri á Galmaströnd í Eyjafirði. Í dag starfar þar Fiskeldi Eyjafjarðar sem sérhæfir sig í lúðueldi. Árið 2003 bjuggu þar á bilinu 60-70 manns.
Norðmenn hófu síldarsöltun um 1880, Svíar, Þjóðverjar og Skotar bættust í hópinn og upp byggðist sjávarpláss með mörgum þorsk- og síldveiðiskipum. Þegar fyrri heimsstyrjöldin braust út 1914 hurfu útlendingarnir á brott og Thor Jensen athafnamaður, sem tekið hafði Hjalteyri á leigu ári áður byggði upp síldarvinnslu. Árið 1937 var byggð stór síldarverksmiðja við Hjalteyri, sú stærsta í Evrópu á þeim samkvæmt sumum heimildum. Eftir því sem leið á 20. öldina dró úr umsvifum Thorsaranna og eftir að síldarbresturinn varð á sjöunda áratugnum var síldarverksmiðjunni lokað 1966.

Hjalteyri is a town in northern Iceland in the Norðurland eystra region. Hjalteyri has 43 inhabitants and is the largest town in the municipality of Arnarneshreppur. Hjalteyri is on the west bank of the Eyjafjörður fjord and is one of the major fishing ports in the region. The company Fiskey originally started operations in Hjalteyri.

Selfoss in Jökulsárgljúfur

Selfoss is a waterfall in the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum in the north of Iceland which drops over some waterfalls about 30 km before flowing into Öxarfjörður, a bay of the Arctic Sea..A few hundred meters downstream of the Selfoss waterfall (11 m high), the Dettifoss waterfall is situated, the most powerful waterfall of Europe. The river originates as melt water from the glacier Vatnajökull and therefore the water flow varies depending on the season, the weather and volcanic activity.
