I'm excited to be the featured artist for the month of April at the Coffee Plantation (Frank Lloyd Wright location) in Scottsdale, Arizona. How blessed I am to have found such peace and happiness through the pursuit of my smoke art as it has combined my passion for photography and art perfectly.
"Metamorphosis 4" smokeartbysara.com

sara_therese_photography posted a photo:

"Metamorphosis 4" You may have noticed that I have a lot of butterfly smoke art. Each butterfly is dedicated to my son, Shawn, who went through his metamorphosis 8 years ago today. He loved the color green and often wore it mixed with yellow and blue. Interestingly, the color associated with the heart chakra is green. Green symbolizes harmony, creativity, health, abundance and nature. It is the combining of yellow (soul) and blue (spirit). How fitting that his favorite colors represent him so well.

So what is Smoke Art?

All the pieces you see begin as photographs I have taken of incense smoke, which becomes the medium to create an art print. Upon viewing the photos, images will become apparent to me, as I tease them out of the twirls and swirls that are naturally formed. Some pieces will remain in a more natural, abstract form, while others may end up as a literal interpretation of a concept. Either way, much of the work involved is done in the digital darkroom, where I work with the design and color of the image with Photoshop.

For those that are interested, I'm using a Canon 5dMII, manual mode, 50mm 1.8, f14, shutter 200, ISO 200, flash 1/8 power. The flash is off camera, Canon Speedlight 580ex, to the left with barn doors made from black paper to prevent lens flare and to keep light off the backdrop. The backdrop is black fabric but I then invert the image in Photoshop (CS4) which changes the background to white.

Meet "Octavius" My first Smoke Art by Sara piece for 2012!

The smoke on this reminded me of the hat of a 20's flapper. Left the eyes off because it seemed better to let the viewer fill them in with their mind's eye.
