The Old Colony Building (named for the early American colony in Plymouth, MA) is also aptly named because it is one of the older remaining skyscrapers in Chicago -- designed by Holabird and Roche (1894).

Taking this photo posed all sorts of photographic problems -focus, exposure, steadiness (no tripod), composition (damn that dumpster!), etc. Glad it came out halfway decent. I was with a group of people going one way and the players were way down this alley the other direction. Otherwise, I would've moved in for a better shot.

Some of the cloud puffs blowing down from the north (see photo below) headed straight for the Hancock Center building. However, the tower parted the clouds like air around a wing and the two streams tailed past over the Loop.

After all the fog last Sunday, I was ready for clear skies. However, while driving back from the suburbs midweek I saw cloud puffs drifting past downtown. After parking the car at home, I grabbed my camera and took the Red Line down to the Hancock Center. Up on the observation deck the puffs seem to materialize out of nowhere and drift south into the Loop.

I used my telephoto to compress this scene of a South Shore train heading north to Millennium Station. It's interesting how this image shares the same color palette as the photo below.

As part of the year long Chicago lakefront sculpture exhibition Andy Scott, a Glaswegian artist, is showing these 1/10th scale maquettes of his Kelpie sculpture. I spotted them outside the Field Museum during my walk in the fog last Sunday. The full scale sculpture is destined for Falkirk in the Central Highlands of Scotland. Interestingly Scott's URL is carved into the base . . . a sign of the times, I guess.

The Crane Company Building is yet another Holabird & Roche design (1913). It is very narrow (4 windows), but deep. The Crane Company, still a major fixture in the plumbing products industry (bad pun) had its original headquarters here. This is from my Sunday photowalk in the fog with the Drink and Click group.
