Ice plant blossoms along the coast soak in the rays on a warm spring day.
3 shots for DOF and Exposure

Interesting bit: seed production is high, with hundreds of seeds produced in each fruit. The fruit is edible. In South Africa the sour fig's ripe fruit are gathered and either eaten fresh or made into a very tart jam.

It's been a while since I've posted a picture of my favorite pier. This was taken in 2011 after a few days of rain. The overflowing water carves its way through the sand and back home.
A rare event as low fog rolls by the Mesquite Dunes in Death Valley National Park. I was really privileged to have witness this amazing final act from a magical morning.
Fun and cold morning at the racetrack. My Samyang fell on its face and broke the lens hood but it's still kickin'. Let me know what you think. More Death Valley shots to come.

.

My first taste of winter and I was ill prepared. Big thanks to David Thompson for letting me borrow his gloves. I would be typing this with stubs if it wasn't for him. Some random setbacks lead to this shot. Firstly, my camera attempted to off itself with my 14mm Samyang by hurling itself to the ground (tripod tipped over). There goes the Samyang. It still worked but the rings were really difficult to turn after doing an endo on the playa. Good thing I have my 17-40mm, right? I take it out of my frozen bag and the rear cap will not come off! The cap was from my sigma but I would have never expected this. Alright, what do I have left in my bag... oh, lets try the 24-105mm. It's not as wide as I would like so I basically shoot the rest of the morning doing vertoramas and I am kind of glad I did. I had already planned on doing a few of these so it worked out in the end in a strange way. I tried a few new things on this one, always trying to improve my processing. Hope it looks alright. Let me know what you think.
from the frost (racetrack playa, death valley national park)

There we were standing around in the afternoon sun, sky clear as can be when we notice a little cloud form above the distant mountains. "Interesting" we thought to ourselves. But this little cloud had mighty goals. Over the course of about 30 minutes this cute cloud turned into a monster, exploding over the mountains and veering right towards us. Some of us were shouting, screaming, and crying with joy. And by "some of us" I mean David. What was nothing turned into something really great. So always stick around because the best things come to those who wait.

.

Low tide reveals a hidden world flourishing with sea life. In this instance there was a negative tide which exposed this lush sea grass twenty meters out from the normal coastline. I ventured to the edge of this reef and waited for a tide to rush in. The camera was very low to capture the stream and to get the moon into frame. I was quite lucky to get the moon and it really completes the photo. This shot was taken at the tail end of dusk which is why I had to shoot at ISO 1600. If I had to give some advice, it would be to embrace higher ISOs. You will be amazed at what your camera can do, just make sure you shoot in RAW. Always! I wanted to limit the shutter to around 3-4 seconds to keep the form of the water. Any longer than this would transform the elegant current into a hazy fog. There was such a short window to capture this secret garden, as it is not often you get such a low tide when the sea grass is so healthy and skies are cooperative. Until next time, I await to see what this hidden world reveals.

.

Such a fragile area. Unfortunately this is quite a popular hiking spot so I had to wait for some rain to wash away all the footprints. With the sun setting earlier lately, I've been racing from work and full on sprinting to this spot every chance I could but no matter how fast I ran, I would always miss the sunset. Disappointed I would just walk around a four foot area perfecting my comp. On this particular evening, I of course show up late again but as I was cursing at the sky I noticed that the light became really really nice. The colors began to deepen and saturate and the moon started to brighten like a fluorescent bulb. All those times I was skunked and prepared my shot paid off as I calmly went to my little area and fired away. No frantic running around, instead, stress-free and happy. It's a wonderful feeling when things just work out.
I'm selling this photo for a million dollars. It will only be printed once. Come and get it.
Basically straight out of the camera. I wanted to see what would happen if I shot at nothing. I kind of like it :)

.

I've been waiting quite some time for a particular sunset to get this special shot. Those who know me know I've been referring to this composition as my "secret comp".

My friend and I showed up at this spot with what appeared to be another average sunset. As the sun went down, wild clouds appeared coming from the southeast. What!? Just what I needed. Sometimes things just go your way...
This sailboat races across the seas to meet up with the setting sun, hoping to extend the day just a little bit longer.
Shot this with my old OLD 70-300 lens. One of the first lenses I ever bought. I'm honestly surprised how well it works every time I use it. It's so cheap and beaten up but it gets it done.

On a rare occasion, the sun will align within the pillars of Scripps Pier. However, you would never know unless you where looking for it. I chose to go with a long exposure to bring out the warmth of the sun and to calm the oceans. Big thanks to Jane for the heads up and for letting me shoot next to her!
