Vík, the southernmost village in Iceland, lies directly beneath the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which lies on top of Katla volcano. Katla has not erupted since 1918. Its present dormancy, one of the longest in its history, has led to speculation that an eruption may occur soon. An eruption could melt enough ice to trigger an enormous flash flood, some say large enough to obliterate the entire town. The town's church, located high on a hill, is believed to be the only building that would survive such a flood. Here's hoping the worst doesn't happen!

Even the on-again, off-again rain couldn't dampen sprits while looking out over the beautiful black sand beaches of Reynisfjara near Vik.

Skógafoss

Waterfalls abound in Iceland, and the powerful Skógafoss is one of her most famous. Situated in the south of Iceland at the cliffs of the former coastline, it is easy to spot from the Ring Road near Skógar. On the east side of the waterfall, a hiking trail leads up to a pass near the Eyjafjallajökull volcano (famous for its 2010 eruption).

It was cold with spitting rain and mostly dull, grey skies. But still. What a ruggedly beautiful place Fjaðrárgljúfur is! The cliffs were soggy, slippery. Yet you can see one brave soul out walking the cliffs. If we'd had more time, we'd have gone back when the conditions and light were better.

The beautiful black sand beach of Reynisfjara includes the signature formation Reynisdrangar in the distance and Arnardrangur ("Eagle rock") on the left.
