Brill Windmill catches the last of the evening sun. This mill represents one of the earliest post mills in the UK with timbers dating back to 1685. Previously considered to be a 'Building at Risk' this nationally important mill has just been restored to a very high standard. Brill Windmill.

Picture taken from inside the mill's roundhouse and showing the mighty main post that supports the whole weight of the windmill body above it. The warning sign was painted by Stanley Freese in the 1950s.

Owned by the National Trust and believed to be the oldest windmill in Britain and bears the date 1627.

Detail showing a French burr bed stone. The forms the bottom of the pair of millstones and is static...whilst the upper stone (runner) is spins at high speed above.

Time for a rest! Each millstone weighs around 0.75 tonnes and, for the most part, are being worked by hand.

The restoration of the 1685 post mill required the removal of the runner stones in order to expose the bedstones. Here the Derbyshire Peak bedstone is shown before further restoation.
