Close to Martindale Stone Quarry lie the remains of several old Ash trees, killed by insect infestation. The distorted burrs make a rather spooky sight, but the remains now provide nourishment to mosses and wild geraniums.

I'd given up on tripod and filters at this point - the rain was just too persistent to make such attention to detail worthwhile. I upped the ISO to 400, prefocussed, shielded the lens with my hand until the last second, then lifted up the camera, tripped the shutter and hoped for this image! I think this may be my favourite. Choosing the right tones for this was tricky. Not too much contrast (it was foggy), not too little contrast (need some weight to the foreground tree), not a full range of tones (fog subdues the extremes), not too warm (it was cold), but not too cold, etc., etc. Finally I settled on this cool quadtone, which I hope conveys the cool mistiness effectively.

Scorhill Stone Circle, Sunset in B&W

This is one of the first images I took when I arrived at the stone circle, just as the sun was going down over the hills. The tallest stone in the circle is shown here and measures over 8ft in height. I couldn't get a colour version of this that I was happy with, so tried a B&W conversion, which I also wasn't happy with. This B&W version, however, has been quadtoned in one of Photoshop's Gray-Black Quadtones, which has separated the tones more effectivedly and I'm finally happy with it.

I really can't decide whether this looks better on a white background or a black background, so take your choice!

I've driven past this on my way in to work for several years, and always loved the human-like shape: a giant machine looking like it's in total control. I processed it in these dark tones to make the shape of the thing more pronounced

A dear old lady was sitting on the bench in front of the church, really enjoying the view (which is magnificent). I hadn't the heart to ask her to move so I could take my image, so decided to drop some distance down the rocks so she'd be hidden. I think she did me a favour!
