Von Arnim was born in January 1890. In 1913, he was sent to Constantinople and served in the German Embassy. When the Great War started, he had to move back to Germany and fought in September 1914 as part of a Garde Ulanen Rgt. in France, St. Quentin where he received the Iron Cross II. class in October 1914.

Already in December 1914 he was transferred back to Constantinople to serve in the German Military Mission. As part of the Mission he became a commander of an Ottoman camelrider squardon of the 4th Ottoman Army. He took part in the first attack against the Suez Canal in February 1915 and received for his performance the Ottoman Silver Liakat Medal, the Ottoman Iron Crescent (Gallipoli star), the Lippische Military Cross of Merit (Militärverdienstkreuz) and the Austrian-Hungarian Military Cross of Merit III. class as shown here.

From December 1915 until August 1916, he became adjutant in the general staff of the Expeditionary Corps, temporarily he was the personal adjutant of Kress von Kressenstein. He took part in the second attack against the Suez Canal and the battle of Romani as commander of an regiment. For his bravery, he was awarded the Iron Cross I. class and was promoted into the rank of an Ottoman major.

From September 1916 until June 1917 he served as adjutant of the general staff and took part in the retreat-battles. He was awarded the Ottoman Mejidiye Medal IV. class in 1917.

In June 1917 he had to return to Germany and joined the Garde Ulanen fighting again in France. Shortly afterwards he was awarded the Bavarian Military Order of Merit IV. class. During summer until autumn 1917, he fought in France, forests of Argonne, as commander of a company.

In September 1917 he was again ordered back to Palestine. He served in the general staff of the 7th Ottoman Army and took part in the retreat-battles (Jordan, Jericho).
In May 1918 he had to return to Germany due to Malaria.

After recovering he served in the German general staff of the Chief of the Army (Stab des Chefs des Generalstabs des Feldheeres). When the war ended, he was located in Bucharest. It seems he had to walk back all the way to his house where he returned in May 1919.

In 1924, he married the daughter of the former German Embassador to Turkey but got divorced already 2 years later. In sharp contrast to his successful military career, he failed as businessman. As result, he and his family lost the family residence (a huge area). He even tried to make a restart in New York. However, due to worldwide crisis, also this attempt failed.
Back in Germany, he became a representative of an American company.

When WW2 broke out in 1939, he had to join again the army. He served in the staff of the 257th infantry division. With them, he got into France and Russia. Due to bad health he was removed from this position and transferred back to Germany in 1942, working in the armament industry.
He survived the war and had a humble job. He died in May 1970.

German artillery involved in the battle of Romani. I would appreciate your help in identifying the canon as 10 or 15 cm.

I have added as notes information to the inscriptions on the shells. The wheel extensions were made in Damascus, in the railway workshop and arrived just a few days prior to the battle (July 21st, they were fixed on the wheels in Bir el Abd).

Can anyone identify the canon? I assume it is a 15 cm canon...but I am not sure. The Axis troops had only 10 and 15 cm artillery, the 21 cm was left at El Arish.

Heavy artillery was pulled by 12-14 bulls. However, often enough, the accompaniying men, German and Turks, had to pull as much as they could to move these heavy canons thru the sand...pure hard work.

Picture taken in 1916 by a German photographer attached to Flight detachment (Fliegerabteilung) 300. The plane is to see at the end of the camps.
Unfortunately, I have no further information to it. It can be either near Romani just before the battle or during the retreat near Bir el Abd.

During the march and fighting at Romani, all soldiers and officers had to save water and to live very humble. A tent was almost like a villa in comparison, even for the top officers.

The canon was pulled by 12-14 bulls. The 21cm artillery was left in Arish because it was too heavy. I am not sure if this gun is a 10 or 15 cm.
