Roads Minister Mike Penning saw progress on the A3 Hindhead bypass project when he was driven through the whole length of the new 1.2 mile tunnel. The £371 million project will improve journey times between London and Portsmouth. It will also reduce traffic at the notorious bottleneck in Hindhead village and restore peace and tranquillity to a highly valued part of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty by diverting the A3 away from the Devil’s Punchbowl, an internationally protected site, and returning it to its natural tranquillity.

On a visit to the Port of London Authority’s Port Control Centre at Gravesend, Minister for Shipping Mike Penning joined a Port of London Authority Harbour Master launch, one of several that oversee navigational safety 24 hours a day on the River Thames between Gravesend and Putney.

The Port of London Authority is the Harbour and Pilotage Authority responsible for safety of navigation on the entire tidal Thames. Its area of responsibility runs for 95 miles from Teddington Lock in the west to the outer Thames estuary in the east.

After his visit the Port of London Authority’s Port Control Centre at Gravesend, Mike Penning, Minister for Shipping experienced one of two purpose-built craft that provide a 24-hour response to oil spills between Tower Bridge and Canvey Island. Funded in part by the terminals that handle oil and oil products, they are managed by the Authority.

The Port of London Authority is the Harbour and Pilotage Authority responsible for safety of navigation on the entire tidal Thames. Its area of responsibility runs for 95 miles from Teddington Lock in the west to the outer Thames estuary in the east.

Mike Penning, Minister for Shipping, visited the Port of London Authority’s Port Control Centre at Gravesend Port to see how its Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) ensure safe, efficient and carefully co-ordinated vessel movements.

Representatives from all the main political parties took part in the annual All Parliamentary Bike Ride. Among the MPs and peers cycling three miles around central London, were Minister for Transport Theresa Villiers and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport Norman Baker. The event helps promote cycling as a means to keep fit, save money and cut carbon footprints.
