Approaching Storm

This is the closest view we got of the Towers. We hiked about one hour pass this point toward the mountains, but the approaching storm chased us away back to our lodge. Once you get closer to the mountains, your view of the Towers gets obstructed until you reach a valley right below the massif. The hike from the road to the Towers is quite long and most people spend a night camping along the way.

This area of the park usually offers a pretty nice view of the mountains, including the famous Torres del Paine after which the park is named. Unfortunately, out of the four days we spent in the park, the weather was pretty bad for two to two and a half days. Although the heavy dark clouds provided a lot of drama to the landscape, the mountains were invisible for the most part. I am determined to return to Patagonia in the future and try my luck again.

This is a different version of a similar photo I posted earlier this year. The vantage point is slightly different and I processed this photo in the latest version of Lightroom, which in my opunion does a better job in bringing out texture in the shadows. Overall, I believe this photo of Salto Grande is better than the previously posted one.

When we first arrived in the Torres del Paine National Park, we were greated by an approaching storm and rather strange light. The light in combination with the surrounding green hills, gray mountains and stormy sky produced surreal reflection on the glaciar-blue water in this small lake.

The Explora Patagonia Hotel on the right side of this photo has a magnificent location and view, but with a price tag of over US$1,000 per night with a four night minimum, it caters to the top 1% (aka the "Job Creators"). I found the atmosphere inside the hotel to be rather boring and stuffy ;-)

"Star Wars" fans may recognize that I titled this photo after a fictional planet blanketed by snow and ice. Although the scenes featuring Hoth in "The Empire Strikes Back" were shot at the Hardangerjøkulen glacier in Norway, Glaciar Grey in Chilean Patagonia reminded me of the movie. Perhaps the surreal light and colors of the glacier and the lake made me feel like I was on some extraterrestial world.

Finally, on the last day in the Park, Los Cuernos del Paine (the Horns of Blue) were visible in the morning light. The view of the Paine massif in the morning is just spectacular. Wish we had more days like this one during our visit to the park.

Right before it started raining for a few days, the winds died and there was incredible stillness in the air, which allowed me to photograph cloud refelctions in the lakes. Considering the relentless winds we have encountered during this trip, calm waters and mirror-like reflections in this area of the world must be very rare.
