Mono Lake Panorama - Sierra Nevada 1

View from Hwy 395 South, Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. Mono Lake is an extremely saline lake in the California desert. It forms large, standing, chemical towers called "tuffa" through the process of evaporation of the lake's meager water in the dry air. The lake is host to over 2 million migratory birds during various seasons of the year; owing to its rich algae bloom which feeds trillions of bring shrimp and alkali-loving flies, which provide a rich source of food for the birds.

I have been traveling for close to two months now in a travel trailer - primarily visiting with family and friends in California. Haven't had much time for photography but when I saw this, I had to stop and capture it. The time of day could not have been better to capture the grandeur of this view.

Today I shot the sunset over the Rio Grande River as it runs its course through the heart of Albuquerque. This is the river that the Spanish Conquistadores followed up into Colorado when they first came up from Mexico searching for El Dorado! Though they never found it, they did bring with them the horse, foreign diseases, their religion, and slavery of the indigenous people.

Some would say, they brought civilization to the area and, in a manner of speaking, they did. The oldest settled and continually occupied city in the US is Santa Fe - right along the Rio Grande!
Watercolor Art 1

I love painting water color but I find it to be truly difficult. More so than oil or acrylic. I think the reason is that I have to work from light to dark without white except for the paper, which truly makes it a challenge for me.

I suppose that is one of the reasons that I love photography. Here is my Watercolor Still Life! Too bad I didn't paint it! Though I did paint the small watercolor studies seen in this shot!

This is a re-edit of a shot that I took several months ago. It seemed to be a popular shot in that many people looked at it, commented favorably, even made it a favorite. But, to be honest, I never liked it in its old form. Frankly, it embarrassed me and I thought about pulling it from the photo stream many times.

Well, I always thought it had potential and so I re-edited it and gave it some thoughtful work. Including the full HDR cycle with a five-shot-bracket, tonemapping, texurization - the full Monty! I hope that my contacts and other friends like it as much as I do now!
Reading Jane Austen 1

GlixPix posted a photo:

I, for one, read Jane Austen's work over and over. When I read Jane Austen, I generally read from paper-bound books as they are lighter and easier to handle than the fine collection you see here.

I believe one cannot get enough Jane Austen. I wish that she left a greater body of work as her legacy to literature. I feel it to be a terrible waste that her writing career was such a relatively short one. But what a joy that she wrote what she did, that her works live on today, and with such tremendous popularity!

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."

So begins Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, perhaps my most favorite, certainly, of all her works, and possibly of all books I have read in my life.

This photograph is my tribute to her wonderful art, literature, and memory. . .

The photograph is of my Illustrated, leather bound, collector's edition from The Easton Press of Nowalk, CT. The paperbacks in the background are "What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew," by Daniel Pool, "The Oxford Illustrated Jane Austen - Minor Works," R.W. Chapman, "Letters From Pemberley - The First Years," by Jane Dawkins, "An Unequal Marriage, or Pride and Prejudice - Twenty Years Later" by Emma Tenant, and "Pemberley, or Pride and Prejudice Continued" by Emma Tenant.

The last one of the Arizona shots that I was fortunate enough to take before the battery was drained on my new Canon 5D Mk II. As you may know, I forgot to bring the battery charger with me on my trip. As I had only received the camera a few days prior to my departure, I had no spare batteries with me.

This shot shows the incredible beauty that I found there among the Saguaro cacti - they are so incredible and so unique!
