This is a really interesting old mausoleum at Mt Olive Cemetery in Nashville. I got to town right as the sun was going down...I hoped to have more time to photograph the cemetery before night came, but I was gald I got to this Mausoleum when I did, I think the lighting works pretty well.

Inside the old abandoned train yards again...this time with another interesting - and creepy - foreground object, an old pair of leather boots. Not sure what the story is, but I'm sure it's not good. Love the lighting in this place.

From the long-abandoned factory in Atlanta. It was very dark and creepy in here, but I knew some of these terrific factory windows would look cool reflected in the pools of water that have gathered over the floor from the past several days of rain. We were glad we didn't run into anyone in here, there were plenty of places to hide, or live. We could see people walking around right outside, so we never felt totally safe here...but still, a cool experience.

Near an old plantation outside of Charleston, South Carolina. Just happened to drive down this road, and it dead ended at an apartment complex. I went to turn around, and this was the easiest way - I pulled in to make a U-Turn, and saw this viewpoint. Absolutely beautiful old tree-lined walkway. Got to love the south, and how these little gems just show up everywhere!

The deservedly famous Angel Oak tree outside ot Charleston, SC. Amazing tree, but hard to get it all in one image. The overcast day helped a lot here, otherwise there would have been way too much contrast.

The Angel Oak Tree is estimated to be in excess of 400-500 years old, stands 66.5 ft (20 m) tall, measures 28 ft (8.5 m) in circumference, and produces shade that covers 17,200 square feet (1,600 m2). From tip to tip Its longest branch distance is 187 ft.

Found this great old hotel in rural Georgia. I could have spent hours photographing this place. The light was amazing...hard to tell while you are there since it appears pretty dark. However, with a long enough exposure, the depth and richness of the colors really comes through beautifully. Rumor has it the place is haunted, but I personally didn't feel any weird presence, unlike some places I've explored.

The light was amazing...hard to tell while you are there since it appears pretty dark. However, with a long enough exposure, the depth and richness of the colors really comes through beautifully.
Another image made inside the old abandoned train yards. I loved the lighting in here, and how it fell across the chair like an interrogation. Creepy place, to be certain, but such cool lighting. You can see a railcar in the distance covered with graffiti.

I was going to title this something much different, but then realized I was posting it on Easter Sunday, and thought better of it. This is from one of the less visited rooms at Pullman. It was pretty dark in there, so this took a fairly long exposure. I liked the moodiness that it has...really feels like a place you shouldn't be exploring...and that creepy door in the middle is so inviting, but not really. It beckons you, but to what end??

As far as I can tell, this seems to have been a room for machining parts for locomotives. There is some heavy duty equipment in here and the placed smelled of old pitch and tar. I loved the lighting in here, all natural - coming through holes in the roof. I also love the curly thing on the right side of the image...to me, it really makes the shot, leading your eye into the image. The place definitely has a lot of character.

This is a self-portrait (of sorts) taken inside the old, abandoned school we explored. This staircase was amazing, and the lighting was tough to work with. I kept trying different exposure lengths to achieve the ghostly appearance....just a fleeting glimpse of someone, or something, haunting the old place.

Needed an image for this month's photo review. The theme was "reflections." I knew there would be dozens of mountains reflected in lakes, etc., so I wanted something different, that would stand out. So Saturday afternoon, I played around in the "studio" upstairs. This is lit from below with a desk lamp turned over. Covered with some materials to add the colors and softness to the light. Some glass on top of that for stability, and then playing around with a fork and knife from the kitchen.

I liked the kind of "hellish" look it made (not by design BTW, just turned out that way).

A far as the photo review itself, the judge liked it - but ultimately I think I would have fared better with a mountain reflected in a lake :) Anyhow, I thought it was pretty cool.

Inside the old, long-abandoned school we explored. This was upstairs in one of the rooms. The broken chair and single girl's shoe made me envision a missing child, or even the missing innocence of youth.

This place must have had so many people pass through it's halls over the years, and now it sits alone slowly deteriorating. Well, correct that - I'm pretty sure it's not entirely alone, no doubt people live here from time to time. Not to mention the ghosts that call this place home.
An update - as of this spring, the zoning ordinances that kept this place alive-ish have expired, so alas, it is going to be torn down to make some new residences. I guess it is progress, but still sucks from a history point of view. I guess that's why we document them!

This is from an old abandoned hotel in Atlanta. It's a pretty large property, maybe a few hundred rooms. Some of them are wide open, and some are still locked tight. Almost all have some collection of furniture left in them. In each room, the furniture arrangement and the lighting are completely different, ranging from terribly boring to quite cool. I used the Edward Hopper quote above, because it really is somewhat subconscious in terms of visualizing what a successful image will be when in a location like this - you go room by room and then something just "speaks" to you.

This old, abandoned church I believe is known simply as Barnett Church. It's down near Crawfordville, GA in Warren County. It sits alone on a dirt road, next to the church cemetery.

I love photographing these old abandoned churches - they are lovely, and yet very sad, too. So many decades of services, weddings, funerals, holiday celebrations...and now just left to decay. The memories that these places hold are amazing to think about.

I have seen very, very few images of this church in Santa Fe, and I don't why - I think it is beautiful! Right in the heart of the city, too...not like it's out of the way. This is at the corner of Grant and Griffin.
As much as I love the bold orange color of adobe, this image fely better in black and white to me...probably the wide range of tones.

smacdaddy (Scott MacInnis) posted a photo:

This is from El Santuario de Chimayo in New Mexico. The beautiful little church is home to one of the United States' largest annual pilgrimages. Each year some 30,000 people from all over the world make pilgrimages to the Santuario de Chimayó during Holy Week, especially on Holy Thursday and Good Friday, some seeking blessings and some in fulfillment of a vow.

The story of the church's history varies quite a bit. The land where the Santuario now stands belonged to Don Bernardo Abeyta, one of the first members of Los Hermanos de la Fraternidad Piadosa de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno (the Penitentes) in the area.

One version of the legend says that during Holy Week, Abeyta (or a friar) saw a light shining from the hillside and dug the crucifix up with his bare hands. He turned it over to Fr. Álvarez, who took it to the Santa Cruz church, but the crucifix mysteriously returned to the spot where Abeyta found it. After the third time this happened, Álvarez and Abeyta decided to build a chapel on the spot to house the crucifix.

Another version says Abeyta was watching his sheep and contemplating his blessings, though he was sick, when a vision of his patron saint, San Esquipula [sic], beckoned to him. He went to the place where the saint had appeared and knelt; he was cured immediately. Other people also were cured there, and Abeyta built the chapel in thanks.

A third version says that the crucifix had belonged to a priest from Esquipulas who accompanied the first Spanish settlers in Chimayó. He was killed by Indians and buried in Chimayó. A flood of the Santa Cruz River (a small tributary of the Rio Grande) in the spring of 1810 uncovered the body and the crucifix. People who remembered the priest dedicated the shrine to the Christ of Esquipulas.

Another image from the Caffeine and Octane Car Show in Alpharetta, GA. This is an old Five Window Coupe from Ford. This image is taken looking straight at the windshield and rearview mirror through the two sides of the raised hood. I thought it made a cool abstract. I liked the symmetry in the reflection, and thought the colors were interesting. If you look carefully, you can see a few raindrops - we had just been drenched in an afternoon downpour.
