The best way to deal with interview nerves at Brighton university is to take photos.
The new Checkland building has the most wonderful views of the South Downs. (Though I'd rather have been out on them than in the building's cell-like interview room!

Despite it being a few days into October , it was T-shirt weather as I took a friend to Balsdean to show him my favourite part of the South Downs.
There was a hamlet here from the 14th century until 1939, when the army occupied the valley and the buildings destroyed in target practice.

With my friends DSLR and a couple of hours to myself, I set off for the South Downs.
Looking down from Woodingdean, I was able to make the most of the zoom lens and finally capture some of those fragments of the South Downs I've been seeing with my "camera eye" for years.
I seem to be following a theme here of the Downs compressed by telephoto lens.

We only had time for a brief walk, but it was nice to discover a different part of the South Downs near Brighton.
A swirling valley system between Ditchling Bacon and Patcham, reminding me of the valleys near Balsdean.
Unfortunately, to access the "Access Land" at Dencher Bottom, just round the corner from here, ramblers have to trespass through the adjoining fields and climb over gates!

My favourite part of the Downs near Brighton - you could be miles from "civilisation", yet Brighton is just over the hill.

I love cycling the Downs, though I have to have a lot a brief camera stops.
This big group had cycled the whole of the South Downs Way from Winchester to here, near Lewes, in 1 1/2 days!

It was shorts & T-shirt weather as we descended into the completely isolated Balsdean valley.
Only half a mile from the edge of Brighton (technically part of it), but it feels like you're in an isolated part of Scotland.

Staring Sheep on the South Downs

As we headed out of Dencher Bottom towards Lower Standean, a load of sheep came to have a look at us.
As usual there were more sheep on the South Downs than people

It was almost the longest day - and with a busy life, I can't get out of the house til 8pm.
But living in Brighton 15 minutes by bike from a national park, a sunny day, and my "point and shoot" in my panniers, I head for the rolling hills.
This is the first field north of the Brighton By-Pass, with other photos of it earlier in the year linked here & in comments below.

Actually, the light wasn't great and without a DSLR and ND filter I can't capture the rolling hills and setting sun, and I can only partially recreate the colours using F-Spot post-processing.

Balsdean

I haven't visited Balsdean for years, but I have a couple of hours to cycle through it with my lovely little digital compact.
Its dull but the rain holds off, and I relax in this lovely valley.It feels miles from anywhere thanks to the swirley valleys, but in fact is almost surrounded by the suburbs of Brighton just over the hills.
